Prince Valiant Comic Strip From 1971
Hal Foster began to gradually step away from the comic series in 1970 due to a decline in health and John Cullen Murphy started to take over the illustrations. We sold a strip from 15 August 1971 worked on by both Hal Foster and John Cullen Murphy for $6,300. The Sunday strip features Zirara, Prince Arn and Val as they travel through the desert to meet Zirara’s father. One panel is missing its paste-up lettering, very good condition overall.

We realized $4,326 for a lot of Hal Foster preliminary artwork and the Sunday final strip completed by John Cullen Murphy. Comic strip is #1824 in the series and was published 23 January 1972. Lot includes a pencil on paper sketch and a pencil and ink wash on board done by Hal Foster, along with the final three panel strip rendered by John Cullen Murphy that measures 17 x 25 inches. Lot is accompanied by a typed story outline and narration and comes from the John Cullen Murphy estate.

Both items are for strip #2120 in the series published on 25 September 1977. Storyline features Karen, teenage daughter of Val and Aleta, cutting off her hair to pursue her ambitions of becoming a warrior and follow in the footsteps of Amazon Queen Hypatia. Comic is rendered in ink over graphite and has some red key lines and blue editorial notes and measures approximately 16.5 x 22.5 inches. Items are accompanied by a typed story outline, and typed story narration.

Comic strip is #2157 in the series and features Val, Aleta and Prince Arn at Camelot as Prince Arn entertains a group of attractive young women. Contrasted with Prince Arn’s success with the ladies are his twin sisters who are unable to find passable suitors near the dining hall. Sunday strip measures 16.5 x 22.625 inches and comes from the John Cullen Murphy estate.
