John Cullen Murphy was an American illustrator who studied under notable artists including Norman Rockwell and Franklin Booth. He started his career illustrating for magazines and later illustrated the comic strip Big Ben Bolt written by Elliot Caplin. Murphy is perhaps best known for illustrating Prince Valiant once Hal Foster decided take on a lighter workload in 1970. Murphy’s illustrations for Prince Valiant are remembered for having a more angular appearance compared to Foster’s style. We’ve sold several John Cullen Murphy comic strips at Nate D. Sanders Auctions. Please reach out if you’d like to sell your original John Cullen Murphy comic strip art or if you’d like a free appraisal.

Here are some of our John Cullen Murphy Prince Valiant realized prices:

The Sunday strip features Zirara, Prince Arn and Val as they travel through the desert to meet Zirara’s father. One panel is missing its paste-up lettering, very good condition overall.
