Before Abraham Lincoln became president he served as a lawyer and dealt with disputes related to property, divorces and murder. We sold a Lincoln ALS from 1857 written to his plaintiff client William H. Davenport of “Davenport v. Sconce and Don Carlos”, a fraud and property case, for $15,000.
8) Abraham Lincoln Check Signed
This Lincoln signed check dated February 28, 1859 was drawn on the Springfield Marine & Fire Insurance Company. It was payable to Springfield merchant and teacher R. H. Beach and sold for an impressive $16,275.
7) Abraham Lincoln 1861 Document Signed
This 1861 Abraham Lincoln signed document appointed Union supporter Daniel Lamb to ultimately protect his fellow West Virginia residents from their Rebels neighbors. This document was in response to a Congress act that allowed Lincoln to allot two million dollars to ”loyal citizens residing in any of the States of which the inhabitants are in rebellion against the Government of the United States”. We realized $19,250 for this special Civil War and West Virginia historical piece.
6) 1862 Abraham Lincoln Autograph Letter Signed as President
We sold an early Civil War Abraham Lincoln autograph letter signed from April 1862 for $20,124. During this tense time the government’s military spending was drastically increasing. In this letter Lincoln evaluates and questions a contract for the purchase of arms.

We realized $25,000 for a fantastic Abraham Lincoln autograph letter signed to his close advisor and associate Norman Judd. In this 1859 letter Lincoln considers a plan to reach German voters in the state by obtaining a printing press and printing German literature.

Lincoln writes to Secretary of Treasury, Salmon P. Chase, in this 1864 letter and refers to reviewing trade rules with Chase. These later implemented rules raised the trade tariff to a record high in order to hurt the South. This fantastic letter sold for $32,548.

In this significant letter penned a week after the Battle of Fredericksburg, one of the deadliest battles of the Civil War, President Lincoln writes to Major Generals William B. Franklin and William F. Smith with a potential plan of how to approach the city. We realized $40,000 for this single page letter is written on Executive Mansion letterhead by Lincoln’s secretary John G. Nicolay and signed “A. Lincoln” at the bottom.
