The Wimbledon item is a Championship Gold Medal Won by Early Tennis Great Harold Mahony in 1896

47553_med Wimbledon AuctionHarold Mahony’s gold medal from Wimbledon 1896. Medal represents the apex of Mahony’s legendary tennis career, triumphing over Wilfred Baddeley for the gold. Mahony was also an Olympic silver medalist and part of the first winning team for the British Isles at the Davis Cup 1903 before his untimely death in a bicycle accident at age 38.

Gold medal features a pair of crossed rackets to obverse, with a tudor rose positioned underneath, surrounded by, ”All England Club / Wimbledon”. To reverse engraved at center is, ”1896 / Mr. H.S Mahony”, flanked by laurel sprigs and surrounded by the title, ”Lawn Tennis Champion”. 18k gold medal bears the maker’s name of Henry Soane, London. Measures 1.5” in diameter. Weighs just over 1 ounce or 31 grams. Faint scratching, else near fine.

He achieved the Wimbledon crown in 1896 at age 29, beating Wilfred Baddeley in five sets: 6–2, 6–8, 5–7, 8–6, 6–3.

Mahony became Ireland’s last Wimbledon singles champion and he was the last Scottish born player to win a grand slam until Andy Murray won the US Open in 2012 and win Wimbledon until Murray won it in 2013.

Though he was raised in Ireland, he was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on 13 February 1867.

He was a pioneer of serve-and-volley, and was a 6’3″ bachelor described as “a giant of a man” with a playboy reputation.

In his monumental 1,800-page, three-volume tome, The History of Irish Tennis, Said Tom Higgins of Mahony in his book, “The History of Irish Tennis,” he “excelled at the volleying game, his great length of limb combined with exceptional alertness and activity, making it very hard for his opponents to pass him after he has once worked his way to the net”.
