Hal Foster Prince Valiant Comic Strip Art From 1937
Prince Valiant debuted February of 1937 and much of the early storylines revolve around Val becoming Sir Gawain’s squire and establishing himself as a knight. We sold comic strip art published on 6 March 1937 for $44,291. The strip features Val navigating the transition into young adulthood as he picks up survival skills by learning to hunt with a fish spear, weighted net and forked arrows from a native boy.

Prince Valiant Comic Strip From 1971
Hal Foster made the decision to begin sharing illustrating responsibilities in 1970 and selected John Cullen Murphy due to his background in anatomy and figure drawing. Murphy started out inking and drawing the backgrounds of strips while Foster remained drawing the characters. We sold a strip worked on by both Foster and Murphy from this transition period for $6,300. Strip was published on 15 August 1971 and features Zirara, Prince Arn and Val traveling in the desert.

We realized $5,625 for original Hal Foster comic art published on 2 June 1968. The storyline of this Prince Valiant Sunday strip features Aleta addressing the council. Strip measures 25 x 35.5 inches and last panel is signed “Hal Foster”. Tape residue in six places around the border and top part detached from lower.

Hal Foster Preliminary Sketches + John Cullen Murphy Prince Valiant Comic Art
By 1975 John Cullen Murphy began to handle most of the drawing for Prince Valiant while Hal Foster was writing the storylines and providing preliminary artwork. We sold a Sunday strip by John Cullen Murphy accompanied by a seven panel preliminary sketch, typed story outline and typed story narration from Foster for $2,954. Preliminary art and final comic art are #2057 in the series and published 11 July 1976 Reverse of Foster’s preliminary artwork contain a sketch of the character Kasov.
