Howard Chandler Christy original art being a watercolor. Featured in George W. Cable’s novel “The Cavalier,” based in New Orleans during the American Civil War. Watercolor signed, “Howard Chandler Christy 1901” at bottom left. Using both watercolor and pencil, Christy depicts a young Union soldier, dressed in standard Privates uniform, seated against a window in a darkened bedroom. A splash of moonlight beams through the window, putting the soldier in the spotlight as he aims his six-shooter at an old Confederate man. Excerpt from “The Cavalier” reads: “I heard a light sound in the hall Lucius Oliver was coming toward my door. The cords gathered in my throat and my finger stole to the trigger the door opened, softly, slowly, and the paralytic stood looking in. The moonlight had swung almost out of the room, but a band of it fell glittering upon the revolver lying in my lap with my fingers on it, each exactly in place it lighted my other hand, on the window-sill, with the bridle in it. Old Lucius was alone. In the gloom I could not see his venom gathering, but I could smell it” Christy showcases his ability to manipulate light and shadow with just the scratch of a pencil and the stroke of a brush in this stunning work. Watercolor measures 37″ x 26″; framed, 41″ x 30″. Light waterstaining along bottom edge, otherwise near fine condition.
