Gold Olympic Medal Sales at Nate D. Sanders Auctions
Though monumental world events such as the Great Depression, WWI, WWII and Olympic boycotts have taken place, the Olympics have remained a symbol of peace and unity to promote international goodwill. Coaches, athletes and spectators alike put aside their differences and participate in friendly competition. Here are some Olympic gold medal sales from various years:
1932 Los Angeles Summer Olympics
The Summer Games of 1932 were held during the Great Depression. Several countries did not travel to compete and as result participation was the lowest it had been since 1904. We sold a gold medal from the Equestrian Team Event awarded to American Edwin Argo for $36,875.

1928 Amsterdam Summer Olympics
The 1928 Summer Olympic Games was a year of many firsts, including a lighting symbolic fire during the Games that was placed in the stadium and women participating in gymnastics and other athletic events. Another first this year was using the design of Italian sculptor and painter Giuseppe Cassioli’s for the Olympic medals that remained until 1972. We sold gold medal from these games for $14,079.

1912 Stockholm Summer Olympics
The summer Olympics of 1912 was the first year that all five continents were represented and was also the debut of women’s swimming, women’s diving and the modern pentathlon. This was also the year that the legendary Jim Thorpe won two gold medals in the decathlon and pentathlon events by huge margins. We sold a gold medal from these memorable Games for $9,975.

1906 Athens Summer Olympics
The 1906 Games introduced several notable features of the Olympics that are still practiced today, such as the parade of nations and closing ceremony. This year’s medal was designed by French sculptor Jules-Clément Chaplain and features Zeus and the Acropolis as a reference to the Games held in Ancient Greece. We realized $9,500 for a gold medal from the 1906 Games.
