Dr. Seuss’s Legacy
Theodor Seuss Geisel was an American children’s author, political cartoonist, illustrator, poet, animator, screenwriter, and filmmaker. He is known for his work writing and illustrating more than 60 books under the pen name Doctor Seuss. His work includes many of the most popular children’s books of all time, selling over 600 million copies and being translated into more than 20 languages by the time of his death.

Lot of 3 Signed Letters From 1957 — Sold for $8,529
We realized $8,529 for a lot of three Dr. Seuss letters from 1957 following the publication of The Cat in the Hat and How the Grinch Stole Christmas! In these letters Seuss writing excitedly about the success of the books and considers toys and games based on the characters. Letters are also accompanied by several drawings from Dr. Seuss and Walt Kelly. All three letters measure 8 x 10.5 inches and are signed “Ted”.

Typed Letter Signed + Drawing — Sold for $4,000
We sold a Dr. Seuss autograph on personal letterhead accompanied with a color The Cat in the Hat illustration for $4,000. Typed letter is dated 24 February 1972 and written to his friend Diddo Clark. Letter measures 7.25 x 10.25 inches and in part reads, “That was the finest letter I have every received on a green balloon in many a month…I am back again on that merry-go-round for Hollywood or New York…Ted”.

Signed First Edition, First Printing of Bartholomew and the Oobleck — Sold for $3,000
Bartholomew and the Oobleck was published in 1949 and revolves around a page named Bartholomew Cubbins who must rescue the kingdom from a substance called oobleck. Unlike many Dr. Seuss books, this title doesn’t rhyme and is written in prose. We realized $3,000 for a Dr. Seuss signed first edition, first printing of this book.

Signed McElligot’s Pool First Edition — Sold for $1,513
McElligot’s Pool was Dr. Seuss’s first title to feature watercolor illustrations. The book was adapted into the song “Anything’s Possible” for the Seussical the Musical. We sold a Dr. Seuss signed first edition of McElligot’s Pool for $1,513. Dr. Seuss draws a fish in his inscription on the verso of the front free endpaper. Next to the fish he writes, “Onak! Onak! Onak!” and below it he signs, “An Onak fish for the Onaks from Dr. Seuss”.

Signed Horton Hatches the Egg — Sold for $1,300
Horton Hatches the Egg is about a loyal elephant named Horton who sits on an egg for a mother bird until she returns from vacation. The book has been used in discussions of nature vs. nurture, adoption, surrogacy, economics and feminism. We sold a signed copy of Horton Hatches the Egg accompanied by a cartoon drawing for $1,300.
