Remembering Dr. Seuss
Beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss published over 60 children’s books during the span of nearly six decades. His books are a childhood staple and even decades after first their initial publication, they remain among the top-selling children’s books. Many believe The Cat in the Hat (1957) was Seuss’s work that made him famous. The story has been adapted into a a theatre show, television show and a highly successful live-action film that grossed over $130 million.

Unpublished & Unfinished Book Manuscript — Sold for $40,805
We sold an unpublished and unfinished children’s book manuscript entitled All Sorts of Sports from the late 1960s for $40,805. Nineteen page manuscript consists of doodles and rhymes along with a Dr. Seuss typed letter signed “Ted”. Seven pages of manuscript are entirely in the hand of Dr. Seuss with the remaining done by an assistant. Manuscript was given to Seuss’s assistant writer and includes a letter of authenticity from them.


Advertising Artwork With Early Grinch Prototype — Sold for $23,100
We realized $23,100 for Dr. Seuss advertising artwork from 1955 that features a Grinch-like character, two years before How the Grinch Stole Christmas! was published. Advertisement is for Holly Sugar, a prominent sugar manufacturer in the U.S. that sold sugar derived from beets. Artwork is mounted to board measuring 30 x 15 inches and includes title “Crazy Chef with Pie” on verso. Dr. Seuss signs lower left of artwork.

Pencil and Watercolor Drawing — Sold for $20,939
We sold a rare Dr. Seuss watercolor and pencil drawing entitled “Mrs. M. on the Trail” for $20,939. Mrs. M is likely the wife of Mr. Mayor of Whoville, who appears in How the Grinch Stole Christmas! and Horton Hears a Who! Artwork is signed, “Drawn with Heart’s blood — Dr. Seuss” and measures 9.5 x 15.5 inches.

Dr. Seuss Pencil Drawing — Sold for $2,813
We sold a Dr. Seuss pencil drawing circa 1950s for $2,813. Drawing features a secretary simultaneously walking, typing and balancing a tray of hot beverages on her head all while carrying a trash basket and phone. Drawing measures 8.25 x 11 inches and is signed “Dr. Kamakazi Seuss” on lower right.

Original Cat in the Hat Drawing — Sold for $1,750
We realized $1,750 for a Dr. Seuss Cat in the Hat drawing added to an abstract drawing done by Seuss’s friend, Diddo Clark. Seuss also adds a thought bubble for the Cat that says, “I don’t know whether the kids did. But I had FUN! Thanks to Diddo.” Clark taught a class for freshman at the University of California at San Diego that Theodor Geisel (Seuss) was a guest speaker for.
