First Edition, First Printing of On the Origins of Species
The publication of On the Origins of Species resulted in immediate controversy, especially over the concept of natural selection due to the understanding of genetics at the time. Within a couple decades the book was broadly accepted. Despite the debate that was initially sparked, the first edition book still sold out on the first day it was released.
We sold a first edition, first printing of Charles Darwin’s masterpiece, On the Origin of Species. All first printing points are present present, including original binding, variant B, title page with copyright information on verso, Table of Contents (pages v-ix) with binder instructions to verso, complete pages 1-502, and folding table present between pages 116-117. Ads at back of volume have been removed as has half-title page, and endpapers have been replaced. Overall very good condition.
First edition copies of On the Origin of Species can garner up to $100,000 or more. Presentation copies, those with excellent provenance or inscribed copies can be worth much more.
