What Are Apollo 11 Flown Flags?

One of the great rarities of the space memorabilia collecting genre also happens to be one of the pieces most in demand — the Apollo 11 Flag Flown to the Moon.  This flag has been sold in a variety of forms but most often it is mounted on a NASA certificate and signed by Buzz Aldrin, Neil Armstrong and Michael Collins. We’ve sold a variety of Apollo 11 flags, including examples signed by the entire crew, signed by a single astronaut and unsigned.

Apollo 11 Flown U.S. Flag With Crew Signed Certificate — Sold for $89,220

American flag flown aboard the historic Apollo 11 mission to the moon, presented on a certificate signed by the Apollo 11 crew: Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins. Official NASA certificate with the Apollo 11 insignia reads: “This flag traveled to the moon with Apollo 11, the first manned lunar landing, July 20, 1969”. Hand-signed in felt pen, “Neil Armstrong”, “Michael Collins” and “Buzz Aldrin”. Flag measures 6″ x 4″, affixed to certificate measuring 9.5″ x 11.5″ and framed to an overall size of 15″ x 17″. Some minor show-through of glue from verso of flag in four spots and minor toning to certificate, else near fine. A scarce memento from the historic mission. Crew Signed Apollo 11 Flag Flown to the Moon — Sold for $63,195

United States flag flown to the moon on Apollo 11 during the historic 1969 mission. Flag is mounted to an official NASA certificate reading: ”This flag traveled to the Moon with Apollo 11, the first manned lunar landing, July 20, 1969.” Certificate is signed ”Neil Armstrong”, ”Michael Collins” and ”Buzz Aldrin” in felt tip and has the Apollo 11 crew emblem near the center. Printed along the bottom edge are the first words by Neil Armstrong after stepping upon the moon: ”One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind”. The silk United States flag measures 6” x 4”, mounted to the NASA certificate, which measures 10” x 12”. Some show through of adhesive to flag corners and light toning to certificate, else near fine.  Our most expensive Apollo 11 flag flown to the moon that we auctioned.  Sold for $63,195.

Crew Signed Apollo 11 Flag Flown to the Moon — Sold for $62,500

United States flag flown to the moon on Apollo 11 during the historic 1969 mission. Flag is mounted to an official NASA certificate reading: ”This flag traveled to the Moon with Apollo 11, the first manned lunar landing, July 20, 1969”. Certificate is signed ”Neil Armstrong”, ”Michael Collins” and ”Buzz Aldrin” in felt tip and features the Apollo 11 crew emblem. Printed along bottom edge are the words spoken by Neil Armstrong after stepping upon the moon: ”One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind”. Accompanied by 84pp. copy of commemorative Newsweek magazine from 11 August 1969, featuring color photos of the moonwalk. Silk United States flag measures 6” x 4”, mounted to the NASA certificate, which measures 10” x 12”. Light toning to certificate, and fading to Collins’ signature. Our second-most expensive Apollo 11 flag flown to the moon that we auctioned. Near fine condition overall.  Sold for $62,500.

Buzz Aldrin’s Personally Owned Apollo 11 Space-Flown U.S. Flag — Sold for $27,225

American flag flown aboard the historic Apollo 11 mission to the moon, from the collection of Buzz Aldrin. Flag is affixed to certificate reading: ”This flag traveled to the Moon on Apollo 11, the first manned lunar landing, July 20, 1969” along with the Apollo 11 mission insignia and the words ”One small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind”. Flag measures 6” x 4.25” and certificate measures 9.5” x 11.5”. Handsomely framed in navy blue mat with wood and brass frame, measuring 16.75” x 19.25”. In stunning, near fine condition. Accompanied by an LOA from David Van Zile, Buzz Aldrin’s stepson. Sold for $27,225.

Apollo 11 Space-Flown U.S. Flag — Sold for $25,623

American flag flown aboard the historic Apollo 11 mission to the moon during that very first lunar landing on 20 July 1969. Flag is affixed to board with the auto-penned signatures of the Apollo 11 crew and the words: ”This flag traveled to the Moon on Apollo 11, the first manned lunar landing / July 20, 1969”. Flag measures 3.75” x 5.75” and board measures 8” x 10”. Near fine condition. With an LOA from Goldberg Auctions and Catherine Whipkey, whose husband Bill Whipkey worked at the Johnson Space Center. A scarce memento from the historic mission. Sold for $25,623.

Buzz Aldrin Signed Apollo 11 Flag Flown to the Moon — Sold for $21,013

Stunning United States flag flown to the moon on Apollo 11 during the historic 1969 mission. With an official NASA certificate reading: ”This flag traveled to the Moon with Apollo 11, the first manned lunar landing, July 20, 1969.” The certificate has the Apollo 11 crew emblem near the center with the additional wording of: ”Apollo 11, July 16-24, 1969. ARMSTRONG — COLLINS — ALDRIN.” Printed along the bottom edge are the first words by Neil Armstrong after stepping upon the moon: ”One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” The silk United States flag measures 6” x 4” and is mounted to the NASA certificate, which measures 10” x 12”. A beautiful unsigned Apollo 11 flag flown to the moon. Fine.  Sold for $21,013. 

Apollo 11 U.S. Flag Flown to the Moon — Sold for $15,000

United States flag flown to the moon on Apollo 11. Flag, measuring 5.75” x 3.75” was given to NASA’s Director of Personnel Raymond J. Sumser, framed with photos from the mission to a size of 21.75” x 17.75”. Very well preserved, flag remains near fine. With an LOA from Sumser’s widow.

Apollo 11 Space-Flown U.S. Flag — Sold for $14,641

American flag flown aboard the historic Apollo 11 mission to the moon, from the collection of Buzz Aldrin.
