Why Do Standalone Abraham Lincoln Autographs Exist?
In some instances Abraham Lincoln received autograph requests and signed cards or slips of paper for this purpose. In other situations collectors clipped or cut his autograph from documents or letters to preserve just the signature. Clipped autographs that include a full “Abraham Lincoln” signature likely came from documents while “A. Lincoln” signatures may have came from letters, free franks, checks or endorsements.
