Flash Gordon is an iconic science fiction comic strip created by Alex Raymond in 1934. It’s known for revolutionizing the comic world as Raymond’s detailed and dramatic illustration style brought something that hadn’t yet been seen in newspaper comic strips. The comic strip pre-dates mainstream science fiction and was one of several influences behind the Star Wars franchise.

Flash Gordon Comic Strip from 1942 — Sold for $13,546
This Flash Gordon Sunday strip was published on 6 September 1942 and features Flash and Dale reuniting in front of an envious Queen Desira. Flash, Dale and Dr. Zarkov flee from giant termites and result to swimming to escape. The strip concludes with the group encountering a cave with a strong magnetic pull. Original strip measures 20.5 x 17.25 inches and is signed by Alex Raymond in lower right.

Flash Gordon Comic Strip Frame — Sold for $7,530
We realized $7,530 for a Flash Gordon comic strip panel from the Sunday strip published on 4 June 1939. The panel features Flash Gordon and heroine Queen Fria clinging to a drawbridge for dear life in a quintessential example of Gordon’s work. Panel is inscribed, “To Faith Farmer from her friend and former neighbor Alex Raymond” to lower right. A caption below the panel image reads, “THEY DANGLE OVER THE FIERY CHASM AS THE GUARD RAISES THE DRAWBRIDGE.” Page is glued to a frame board that measures 8 x 9.75 inches.
