Taylor previously was a career officer in the United States Army, rose to the rank of major general and became a national hero as a result of his victories in the Mexican–American War. As a result, he won election to the White House despite his vague political beliefs. His top priority as president was preserving the Union. He died sixteen months into his term, having made no progress on the most divisive issue in Congress, slavery.

Zachary Taylor Owned Eyeglasses & Case
Dark red leather case and eyeglasses belonging to 12th president of the United States, Zachary Taylor. Custom-made case has design in gilt and reads: “Z. TAYLOR” on top. Inside is lined with red velvet and white satin and contains “BAILEY & CO. / 136 / Chestnut St. Philad” company logo. Gold glasses have rectangular lenses with rounded edges. Box has push-button release and measures 5.5″ x 1.5″ x 0.5″. With provenance detailing the chain of ownership, originally owned by Taylor’s daughter Ann Mackall Taylor. Near fine condition. Sold for $8,400.
Scarce Zachary Taylor document signed as President, just three days after his Inauguration, dated 8 March 1849. Particularly rare as a Zachary Taylor cabinet appointment hardly has appeared at a major public auction, at least in the last 40 years of the recorded sales listed in ”American Book Prices Current.” Here, Taylor appoints Jacob Collamer of Vermont as Postmaster General. Signed ”Z. Taylor”; countersigned by Secretary of State ”John M. Clayton”. Printed text reads in full: ”To all who shall see these presents Greeting: Know Ye; That reposing special trust and confidence in the Patriotism, Integrity and Abilities of Jacob Collamer, of Vermont, I have nominated, and, by and with the advice and consent of the United States Senate, do appoint him to be Post Master General of the United States, and do authorize and empower him to execute and fulfil the duties of that Office according to law and to have and to hold the said Office, with all the powers, privileges and emoluments to the same of right appertaining; unto him, the said Jacob Collamer, during the pleasure of the President of the United States for the time being…” With original blindstamp seal intact. Vellum document measures 17.5” x 14.5” with a tear at left, though affixed with red wax. Some toning and foxing throughout, else very good to near fine. Sold for $7,500.

Zachary Taylor Naval Appointment Signed as President — Just a Week After Taking Office
Zachary Taylor naval appointment signed as President, dated 16 March 1849. Document appoints a John C. Song as a ”Captain in the Navy”. Partially printed document is signed ”Z. Taylor” with various naval emblems flanking the text. Countersigned by Secretary of the Navy William Ballard Preston. A blindstamped Department of the Navy seal is affixed to the bottom half, atop an etched nautical scene. Measures 15.5” x 17.25”. Some creasing and toning; very good condition. Sold for $5,500.

Dated 16 July 1849, document appoints Nathan Sargent as Recorder of the General Land Office and bears a blindstamped United States seal to lower left corner. Nice, clear signature, “Z. Taylor” at document’s conclusion. Document, which measures 14″ x 10″ has folds throughout, though none affecting signature. Black frame measures 31.5″ x 20.25″ with gray marble-patterned mat. Fine condition. Sold for $4,551.
Zachary Taylor 1850 Military Appointment Signed
Zachary Taylor military appointment signed “Z. Taylor” as President, dated 20 March 1850 from the “City of Washington”, and countersigned by Secretary of War George Crawford. Here, Taylor appoints William A. Hammond as assistant surgeon. He was later appointed the 11th Surgeon General of the US Army with a rank of brigadier general during the Civil War by Lincoln. Document is flanked with two patriotic insignias and includes original blindstamped seal to upper left. Document measures 13.75″ x 17.25″ with folds and toning throughout, else very good. Also includes Hammond’s original 1872 partly-printed certificate for the Society of Arts and Sciences, measures 17″ x 22″ with chips to edges and one circular chip to center. Lastly includes plaque notating the document, a portrait photo of Hammond and Taylor, all of which can be nicely framed together. Overall, near fine. Sold for $4,382.

Preston, document appoints Henry St. George Hunter as Passed Midshipman. Partially printed document measures approximately 10.75” x 7.5”, framed with an engraving of Taylor to a size of 20.5” x 13.5”. Not examined out of frame, document appears very good, with some foxing and folds. With a bold signature by Taylor. Sold for $4,160.

Serving just 16 months in office, Taylor is the third rarest Presidential autograph, only behind William Henry Harrison and James Garfield. Countersigned by Secretary of the Interior Thomas Ewing, Sr., document appoints Anthony Walke as register of the land office at Chillicothe, Ohio. Partially printed document measures 17.75” x 11.25”, with blindstamped Interior Department seal. Separation starting at folds, and smudge to Taylor’s signature, likely, based on appearance, done by Taylor at the time of signing. Overall very good condition. Sold for $1,375.
Zachary Taylor Letter Signed During the Mexican-America
Zachary Taylor letter signed at the close of the Mexican-American War, datelined “Head Quarters, Army of Occupation / Camp near Monterey, Oct. 19th 1847”. In this tactful letter, Taylor writes Colonel John Francis Hamtramck, effectively denying Hamtramck’s desire for active fighting. Letter reads in part, “My dear Colonel…It would have given me much pleasure to yield to your wish to join the other column, but under circumstances which so vitally affect the public service in this quarter I am compelled to retain yourself and your noble regiment in its present position. No one better than I myself knows its chivalric zeal and enthusiasm, its excellent state of drill and discipline and desire for more active service, but these very qualities render it the better safeguard for the public interests on this line. / My late communications with War Dept has strongly recommended the charge of this line to be given, in my leaving the country, to Genl [John E.] Wool, and if my suggestions can be of any avail, there are sure prospects that the command will fall upon him, I am confident that it is not in my power to speak of a successor in more strong or flattering terms than I have in my recommendation of him, and I do not doubt it will be accorded to him. On this ground therefore I think you have no reason to apprehend any interference with your present position. / It is well understood that additional troops have been called out, and it is not impossible (indeed it is anticipated) that a portion may come here and afford, at no very distant day, should the war continue, opportunity for active operations. I truly hope such good fortune may fall upon yourself and your regiment, it needs but the occasion, I feel assured, to distinguish itself and behave with honor to itself and the state it has thus far so well represented. / I regret much, my d[ea]r Colonel that I shall not have the pleasure to see you before my departure, but I trust the day is not distant, when I shall have the gratification of again meeting with and thanking you for your many terms of regard. / Trusting that you will not long be disappointed in your desire to meet with active service, and wishing you and your officers all prosperity & distinction…[signed] Z.
