Wizard of Oz Autographs
Awhile back, we at NateDSanders.com Auctions bought a rare set of Wizard of Oz autographs in the L. Frank Baum “Wizard of Oz” book and put it into a client’s collection in Ohio. And, not since then have we seen another assemblage of Wizard of Oz autographs in the Baum book. Before then, we had seen a handful, but our copy might have been the most magnificent. Please take a look. It even has Toto’s paw print:
Wizard of Oz autographs in the L. Frank Baum “The Wizard of Oz” hardbound second edition book with illustrations throughout by W.W. Denslow. Signed by the cast, including: Judy Garland, Ray Bolger, Jack Haley, Bert Lahr, Victor Fleming, Margaret Hamilton, Frank Morgan, Clara Blandick, and also Toto’s ink paw print. This early Baum classic book contains 21 signatures and inscriptions to Betty Danko, Margaret Hamilton’s stunt double in the film. Danko was injured on the MGM set while filming a broomstick riding sequence. She was hospitalized for a total of 11 days, during which this book was presented to her. Judy Garland’s signature appears twice — the second with an inscription to Danko reading, “For Betty, Get Well Quickly.” Danko’s total earnings on the film were $790 dollars. Inscribed copies with signatures of Garland, director Victor Fleming, and pet Toto’s paw print are rare and highly valued among collectors. Published by the Bobbs-Merril Company: Indianapolis, Braunworth & Co. Bridge Press, Connecticut, 1903. Light wear to spine and cover, pages lightly toned, occasional minor tearing, overall very good condition. Nate D. Sanders paid $16,800 for this book and put into a client’s collection in Ohio.
