Important Winston Churchill typed letter signed as Prime Minister, announcing his resignation from that office, dated 6 April 1955. After suffering a severe stroke in 1953, Churchill’s health quickly began to deteriorate affecting both his speech and ability to walk. Written on official 10 Downing Street stationery, letter to Conservative politician John Harvey reads in part: ”…For some time past I have not felt that at my age it would be right for me to incur such new and indefinite responsibilities I have therefore tendered my resignation to The Queen”. Churchill endorses Anthony Eden as his successor in upholding ”…the causes of Tory democracy which Lord Beaconsfield proclaimed, which Lord Randolph Churchill revived, and which I have tried to serve…[signed] Yours sincerely / Winston S. Churchill”. Two-page letter on two sheets has a hole punched to upper left and measures 7.5” x 9.5”. Lot includes retained copy of Harvey’s reply. Folds and scattered minor stains, else near fine. Sold for $12,500.

Winston Churchill’s Personally Owned and Worn Stetson Hat
Winston Churchill’s own Stetson worn by the Prime Minister during his tour of the United States in 1952. The John B. Stetson hat is 3X beaver. The interior hatband bears Churchill’s name in gilt lettering. Included in the lot is a DVD of Churchill donning the Stetson. Brown size 7 1/8 hat is in near fine condition. With provenance from Profiles in History. Sold for $8,098.
Winston Churchill Signed Limited First Edition of “Marlborough: His Life and Times” — Rare Set Signed by Churchill, One of Only 155 in the Limited Edition, Here in the Original Bindings
Winston Churchill signed limited first edition of “Marlborough: His Life and Times”, a four volume biography of Churchill’s ancestor, John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, with extensive plates, illustrations and folding maps within. Churchill signs the limited edition page of Volume I, “Winston S. Churchill”, indicating this series as #39 in the limited edition of 155. London: George G. Harrap, 1933-38, with “First Published” on copyright pages. All four volumes are bound in their original orange morocco leather bindings, accented in gilt with five raised bands to spine, top edge gilt, and Churchill’s heraldic coat of arms in gilt to the front of each volume. Each volume measures 6.5″ x 9.75″. Darkening to spines, some light scuffing and foxing, joints starting in Volume I and the rear joint of Volume III. Overall a very good set, rare as signed in a very small limited edition run. Sold for $7,875.

Winston Churchill Signed “The Second World War” Book
Winston Churchill signs a copy of Volume I of his memoir “The Second World War.” Cassell & Co. Ltd: London: 1948. The volume, entitled “The Gathering Storm,” is signed upon the half title page: “Inscribed for M. Jacques Robert by Winston S. Churchill / 1948”. The theme of the book, covering the years from WWI to 1940, is “how the English-speaking peoples through their unwisdom, carelessness and good nature allowed the wicked to rearm.” Churchill was no longer Prime Minister when he wrote his six volume memoir, and controversy erupted over his use of official records to write his book. He was, however, granted special access by Prime Minister Clement Attlee because of Churchill’s exceptional status. The elegantly bound volume with 5.5″ x 8.25″ red boards and gold edges is housed in its original wooden slipcase. Overall in very good condition. A riveting signed account of WWII signed by England’s tireless guardian. Sold for $2,756.

Winston Churchill signed photo display, a magnificent close-up portrait of the British Prime Minister staring intently out of frame. Churchill clearly signs to mat underneath photo, ”Winston S. Churchill”. 8” x 10” photograph is mounted to board, and matted to an overall size of 11.75” x 14.25”. Light uniform toning to mat, and areas of minute foxing to edge of photo. Very small area of discoloration to upper left of photo. Overall near fine. Sold for $2,188.
Winston Churchill Letter Signed as Prime Minister, Regarding His WWII Memoir, ”The Second World War”
Winston Churchill typed letter signed as Prime Minister, regarding corrections to his highly acclaimed memoir, ”The Second World War”. Churchill writes on his Prime Minister letterhead, embossed with ”10, Downing Street”, on 19 September 1953 to Commodore Gordon Allen, part of his ”Syndicate” who helped him write the book series. Letter reads in part, ”Here are some very interesting comments by Admiral [Robert] Carney. I should be so much obliged if you will check our account by these, and see whether any alterations are necessary. I noticed that we omitted to state in our account that Admiral Carney was Chief of the Staff. His agreeable letter shows that he was not in the least offended. I shall be very glad if you will send me back our Chapter, with any suggested alterations, and also if you will explain to me the points we have omitted or about which there is a difference….[signed] Winston S. Churchill”. Letter measures 7.5” x 9.5”. Rust from paperclip at top left, otherwise near fine condition with bold signature. Sold for $1,500.
