As an actor who once described himself as looking like a “retired pugilist”, Broderick Crawford defied the expectations of Hollywood at the time, transitioning from a character actor to leading actor in his most career-defining role as Willie Stark in “All The King’s Men.”

With famous lines like, “You wanna know what my platform is? Here it is. I’m gonna soak the fat boys and spread it out thin.” It’s no wonder “All The King’s Men” became a cult classic to the political film oeuvre.

Oscar Awarded to Broderick Crawford For Best Actor as Willie Stark in “All The King’s Men”
The 1949 drama also won Best Picture and Best Supporting Actress. The film, based on the famous novel by Robert Penn Warren, delved into the murky underside of politics in 1930s Louisiana.
To prepare for the role of Willie Stark, Broderick Crawford watched newsreels of Huey Long, the former Louisiana senator and governor on whose life the novel was loosely based.

Interestingly, Crawford was up against John Wayne for his role in ”Sands of Iwo Jima” and Wayne had declined the role of Stark, which he felt was unpatriotic.
The award is particularly scarce as it’s one of the last Oscars to become publicly available — award recipients were forbidden to sell their Oscars after 1950.
