Original 19th Century Thomas Edison-Designed Universal Stock Ticker — Low Serial #441

Rare universal stock ticker designed by Thomas Edison in 1871, which revolutionized Wall Street by synchronizing stock prices across all exchange companies, allowing for exponential efficiencies of scale in the financial markets. Edison’s design also made smaller exchanges obsolete, allowing for centralized command and control in New York, thus precipitating the rise of the NYSE. One of his first major inventions, Edison designed the stock ticker for a subsidiary of Western Union, which manufactured this model 3A in the 1870s. Machine has a low serial # of 441, indicating it was one of the first universal stock tickers produced.

Ticker machine is lacquered in brass, and accompanied by four additional stock ticker type wheels. Serial number is engraved to side, along with ”ET-3-A / Universal Ticker / 22-OHMS”. Ticker is mounted on original circular base with Western Union logo in gilt cartouche over black paint. Measures 8.75” in diameter across the base and approximately 10.5” tall, with glass dome cover measuring 9.5” in diameter and 12” tall. Expected wear, overall in very good condition, with dramatic presentation. Sold for $12,500.

Thomas Edison’s Universal Stock Ticker, Circa 1900

Rare universal stock ticker designed and manufactured by Thomas Edison, circa 1900. Edison’s invention revolutionized Wall Street by synchronizing stock prices across the exchange companies, allowing for the meteoric rise of the NYSE in the early 20th century. It was one of Edison’s earliest major inventions, first designed for a subsidiary of Western Union, and then manufactured by his own company, as evidenced by the stamp on the side, “M’F’D. BY / T.A. EDISON, INC”, with a serial number of 11804. While not the earliest universal stock ticker, this model is preferred by collectors as it originates from Edison’s factory.

Ticker machine is made of brass, with a cast iron base, and replacement glass dome. With original parts but missing the ink box and tape spindle. Machine measures 7.5″ in diameter across the base and approximately 11″ tall, 16.5″ with glass dome cover. Expected wear, overall in very good condition. Sold for $6,300.

“The New York Times” From 30 October 1929 Reporting on “Black Tuesday”, the Stock Market Crash of 1929 With Headline “Stocks Collapse in 16,410,030-Share Day”

“The New York Times” from 30 October 1929 following “Black Tuesday” on 29 October, the panic-fueled day of selling that plunged the United States into the Great Depression. The record of over 16 million shares traded on Wall Street that day wouldn’t be broken until nearly forty years later, and caused a loss of $14 billion dollars in value. “The New York Times” devotes four columns to its headline, “Stocks Collapse in 16,410,030-Share Day, But Rally at Close Cheers Brokers; Bankers Optimistic, to Continue Aid”, with the use of the term “Stocks Collapse” extremely rare in reporting from that time. The coverage is tempered, though, with an almost eerily optimistic tone, clearly lacking the benefit of hindsight: sub-heads include “Leaders See Fear Waning / Point to ‘Lifting Spell’s in Trading as Sign of Buying Activity.” They continue, “Hope Seen in Margin Cuts”, “Sentiment in Wall St. More Cheerful”, “Officials Are Optimistic” and “Bankers Believe Liquidation Now Has Run Its Course and Advise Purchases”. It wouldn’t be until 8 July 1932, however, when stocks bottomed out, although the heaviest sell-off had already happened when this issue hit newsstands. Newspaper is very scarce, as the full impact of the crash and the Great Depression weren’t anticipated at the time, and issue is complete, running 52pp., with coverage of the crash extending through page 7. Paper measures 17.75″ x 22.5″. Expected toning, but overall in very good to near fine condition given the fragility of newspaper, with very little chipping. Sold for $1,500.
