Wallis Simpson, the Duchess of Windsor Owned Mink Cape
Wallis, Duchess of Windsor (born Bessie Wallis Warfield; 19 June 1896 – 24 April 1986), known as Wallis Simpson, was an American socialite and wife of the Duke of Windsor, the former British king Edward VIII. Their intention to marry and her status as a divorcée caused a constitutional crisis that led to Edward’s abdication. The King’s desire to marry a woman who had two living ex-husbands threatened to cause a constitutional crisis in the United Kingdom and the Dominions, and ultimately led to his abdication in December 1936 to marry “the woman I love”. After abdicating, the former king was created Duke of Windsor by his brother and successor, King George VI. Wallis married Edward six months later, after which she was formally known as the Duchess of Windsor, but was not allowed to share her husband’s style of “Royal Highness”.
Luxurious mink cape owned by the Duchess of Windsor, Wallis Simpson, considered the best dressed woman of the 20th century. Beautiful cape features a dark mink collar and vertical panel, with four panels of white mink filling out the body of the cape. Secured at top with a braided cord closure. Cape measures approximately 15.5″ long. Both the fur and interior lining are in near fine condition. The fabric lining attached to the fur has some tears and fur is pulling away from the fabric in areas. With an autograph note signed on custom stationery by Janine Metz, the Duchess’s social secretary, to whom this cape was given; lot also includes a photo from the Bal des Bercreaux, French-American Aid for Children Auction catalog, where the cape was featured as lot 11 in its 2008 sale. Sold for $3,474.
