Ulysses S. Grant Document Signed as President to a Lady
Ulysses S. Grant document signed as President, appointing Mrs. Ellen Keiser Sanderson to the position of Postmaster in Springfield, Ohio. Sanderson’s husband, Colonel John P. Sanderson gained notoriety during the Civil War for exposing a plot by the Knights of the Golden Circle, a secret pro-slavery political organization. Document is dated 26 February 1875, and boldly signed “U.S. Grant” at lower right. Measures 17″ x 14″, with intact green seal. Some spotting, and affixed to flexible card stock. Overall very good condition. An unusual 19th century appointment, the first we’ve seen appointing a woman. Sold for $1,229.
Ulysses S. Grant Document Signed as President
Attractive document signed by Ulysses S. Grant as President, appointing Francis Vincent as Deputy Postmaster of Vineyard Grove, Massachusetts. Signed “U.S. Grant” on 8 December 1873. With intact white Great Seal at lower left. Measures 16.5″ x 10.5″. Archival repair to paper’s verso and chipping along edges. Overall in very good condition. Sold for $938.
