The Scarcest of 19th Century Campaign Banners Hand-Colored by Currier and Ives — The John Bell and Edward Everett Jugate Banner Broadside for the 1860 Presidential Election
Scarce campaign broadside for John Bell and Edward Everett, the candidates for the Constitutional Union party in the 1860 Presidential campaign. Lithograph is the scarcest of 19th century Currier and Ives broadsides, hand-colored by the storied print makers, and with full margins not usually found on this broadside. Strong unionists who believed that slavery was protected by the U.S. Constitution, the candidacy of Bell and Everett split the southern vote, effectively giving the election to Abraham Lincoln. Their campaign banner reads at top, ”Liberty and Union Now and Forever One and Inseparable / No North, No South, No East, No West, Nothing But the Union”. With Currier and Ives copyright in 1860 at bottom, which also reads, ”Grand National Union Banner for 1860 / The Candidates and Their Platform”. The candidates’ names of John Bell, of Tennessee and Edward Everett of Massachusetts are also featured in the banner. Broadside is hand-colored by Currier and Ives, with unfaded rich, dark colors. Lithograph measures 13.5” x 18”, with original borders. Expert restoration including rice paper backing, though no restoration to the coloring except to a small spot of scuffing just below the tassels between the red velvet curtains. Some foxing to margins. Overall in very good to near fine condition. Sold for $12,600.
Extremely scarce Abraham Lincoln & Hannibal Hamlin 1860 jugate campaign ribbon in silk, one of only a handful extant. Engraved by J.D. Lovett of New York, design features a split rail fence below the portraits and the phrase ”Free Territory for a Free People” above. Beautiful example measures 2.375” x 6.375”, in near fine condition.
Lot also includes two silk 1844 campaign ribbons for James K. Polk, featuring Polk’s portrait as ”Young Hickory of Tennessee”. Fraying to top and bottom edges, and light discoloration, Each measures 2.5” x 5”, in very good condition. Sold for $8,640.
1860 Campaign Portrait Flag Banner for Stephen Douglas — One of Less Than 10 Known Examples
Important remembrance from the most consequential Presidential election in U.S. history, the 1860 contest pitting Democrat Stephen Douglas against Republican Abraham Lincoln. This portrait flag banner, the most collectible banner, features Douglas at top left, center in the star portion of the flag with “FOR PRESIDENT, / STEPHEN A. DOUGLAS, / VICE PRESIDENT, / HERSCHEL V. JOHNSON” printed upon the stripe portion of the flag. Banner measures 13″ x 8″. Small amount of creasing at lower right, otherwise near fine condition. An excellent example of this banner, one of less than ten known to still exist. Sold for $9,975.
Theodore Roosevelt Autograph as President; Theodore Roosevelt Autograph in Copy of His Complete Works — 15 Volumes
“The Complete Works of Theodore Roosevelt” executive edition with Theodore Roosevelt autograph as President, published by P.F. Collier & Son: New York: 1899. The front free endpaper of the first volume bears the President’s autograph dedication, “With good wishes of / Theodore Roosevelt / Nov 7th 1904”. Complete 15-volume set comprises volumes titled in part, “American Ideals”, “The Wilderness Hunter”, “Hunting the Grisly and Other Sketches”, “The Winning of the West”, “The Naval War of 1812”, “The Rough Riders” and “Addresses and State Papers”. Bound in navy blue cloth boards with contrasting print lettering to spines. Each volume measures 5.75″ x 8″. Volumes show a great deal of loss to the print lettering on the spine as typical of this set. Light surface loss to exterior edges and toning to page edges. The volume “Presidential Addresses & State Papers” has a tear to its first page and signed first volume shows some light staining to boards, else lot is near fine overall. Sold for $5,093.
Rare Theodore Roosevelt Toy Teddy Bear Drum, Circa 1907
Theodore Roosevelt toy Teddy Bear drum, circa 1907. Famously the ”Teddy” Bear’s namesake, Theodore Roosevelt is featured on the drum’s tin band in his Rough Rider uniform, playfully leading a troop of Teddy Bears, as they carry a sword, gun flag, drum and horn. Drum measures 11.75” in diameter and 7” high. In original and unaltered condition, including fittings and original drum heads. Very minimal scattered surface rust on the tin portion, and some light scratches to paint. In very good plus condition. Sold for $4,063.
As President, Theodore Roosevelt signed copy of ”The London Company of Virginia”, published for the 300th anniversary of the Jamestown Colony, the first permanent English settlement in North America. President Roosevelt signs the front free endpaper, ”To Capt. S.A. Cheney with the best wishes of / Theodore Roosevelt / Feb 19th 1909”, likely inscribed to Major S.A. Cheney of the Corps of Engineers. Number 22 of a limited edition of 300, book includes 23 gorgeous photogravures, published by Devinne Press in 1908. Full leaf photogravures begin with Queen Elizabeth and include other prominent contributors to the formation of Jamestown including Sir Walter Raleigh, Sir Francis Drake, King James I of England, John Smith, and Pocahontas. Book measures 9” x 11.75”. Some foxing to gravures, otherwise interior is clean and near fine. Richly bound in one-half pebbled morocco leather, with the title and seal of Virginia in gilt on front. Front board is detached and small loss of leather to spine. Signature page has light foxing, otherwise near fine. Overall in very good condition. Sold for $3,750.

Single volume is dedicated on the front free endpaper by the President, “with good wishes from Theodore Roosevelt / Oct 1st 1905″. New York: P.F. Collier & Son, Publishers, 1885, bound in navy blue boards with gilt lettering and measuring 5.75″ x 8”. Ex-libris book has library markings, otherwise in very good condition with light shelf wear. Signature page is smudged on three words, but otherwise nicely preserved. With PSA/DNA COA. Sold for $1,811.
