The Duke and Duchess of Windsor
Scandal is one thing — but with a Royal scandal suddenly you have the whole world’s attention.
Take the Duke of Windsor — a title that never existed in the royal Monarchy before Prince Edward, who decided to abdicate the throne in the throngs of a love affair with an American socialite named Wallis Simpson.
It all went down on 11 December 1936, with a very public radio broadcast when the King announced his decision:
“I have found it impossible to carry the heavy burden of responsibility and to discharge my duties as King as I would wish to do without the help and support of the woman I love.”
The Duke and Duchess of Windsor remain one of the British monarchy’s most well-remembered royal snafus.
As an American socialite from Baltimore, Wallis Simpson, The Duchess of Windsor, married Edward as her third husband.
“You have no idea how hard it is to live out a great romance,” Wallis told a friend. She became the Duchess of Windsor, an invented title unto herself — though the Royal Family shunned her for most of the rest of their life together.
Colin Firth took home a well-earned Oscar for his portrayal of King George VI — brother of The Duke — in this memorable scene where him and his wife travel to a party at Windsor Castle.

Wallis Simpson, Duchess of Windsor personally-owned Argentinian alligator Cartier handbag. It sold at auction for $14,351.
Bejeweled bracelet owned by Wallis Simpson, Duchess of Windsor, made by famed jeweler Kenneth J. Lane. It sold at auction for $8,908.
This Wallis Simpson, Duchess of Windsor, personally owned necklace sold at auction for $6,691. This necklace has provenance from a 2004 Christie’s auction in Rome of the property the Duchess had gifted to her personal assistant, Ophelia Sanegre Belini.
A second stunning Wallis Simpson, Duchess of Windsor evening bag sold at auction for $8,908.
These doeskin gloves worn by Wallis Simpson sold at auction for $8,908. With provenance from the 1997 ”Duke & Duchess of Windsor” sale at Sotheby’s, lot 2252/6.
This portrait photo of Wallis Simpson, Duchess of Windsor taken by Frank Turgeon sold at auction for $7,788.
With provenance rom the famous Duke and Duchess Sotheby’s New York auction which took place on 19 November 1997.
As for the King Edward VIII, Duke of Windsor, and again from the Sotheby’s auction, we sold this portrait personally owned by the Duke himself for $8,567 at auction.
The above photo was taken by the well-known celebrity/resort photographer Frank Turgeon, whose blindstamp appears on the lower left corner and with a signature was added in pencil at the lower right on the mat.
A second portrait personally owned by the Duke himself sold at auction for $5,027. Most likely taken around the time he abdicated, this photo was taken by famed photographer Hugh Cecil.

Their love affair lasted, not always easy.
The Duchess was finally allowed to visit Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace, but only after her husband’s death in 1972.
“He was the open sesame to a new and glittering world,” Wallis said of her love. “Yachts materialized; the best suites in the finest hotels were flung open; aeroplanes stood waiting…It was like being Wallis in Wonderland.”
