He is called the “Father of the Nation” in the Republic of China, and the “Forerunner of the Revolution” in the People’s Republic of China for his instrumental role in the overthrow of the Qing dynasty during the Xinhai Revolution. Sun is unique among 20th-century Chinese leaders for being widely revered in both mainland China and Taiwan.

Sun Yat-sen Signed First Edition of His Book ”The International Development of China”

Scarce signed copy of Sun Yat-sen’s book, ”The International Development of China”, boldly inscribed in fountain pen by the Chinese leader on the front free endpaper, ”Mr. H.S. Quigley / Sun Yat-sen”. New York and London: G.P. Putnam’s Sons, 1922 first English edition. Book is inscribed to Harold Scott Quigley, a scholar of Chinese studies who acquired the autograph in Shanghai in 1923, possibly during the Sun-Joffe Agreement, which was held in Shanghai in January 1923. In original publisher’s binding, book contains all maps, including the folding map housed in the rear pastedown pocket. Book measures 5.675” x 8.25” and runs 265pp. Text block has pulled away from backstrip at page 49. Portrait and biography of Sun, taken from jacket, have been affixed to front pastedown and free endpaper, underneath signature. Some pencil erasure at bottom of signature page. Chip to top of backstrip, and paper clip to rear endpaper. Overall in very good condition. An important book authored by Sun Yat-sen, the founding father of China, and scarce as signed by him. Sold for $17,690.

Sun Yat-sen Autograph on His Cabinet Photograph

Extremely rare cabinet photograph signed by Chinese revolutionary and political leader, Sun Yat-sen. A formal, half-length portrait of the founder of modern China, signed in blue ink on the lower portion of the image. Black and white image measures 3.75″ x 5.5″, mounted to larger board embossed “Wo Shing, 425 Nanking Road, Shanghai.” Signed photographs of Sun Yat-sen are exceedingly rare. In very fine condition. A stunning piece.   Sold for $8,652.

Silk 28.5″ x 43″ Photographic Banner of Sun Yat-sen

Large silk banner featuring a lithographic portrait of China’s founding father Sun Yat-sen, produced in 1925 after his death to commemorate him. Portrait is laid down on the silk background, with black text printed directly on the silk. Banner measures 28.5″ x 43″. Some light soiling and holes, mostly confined to margins. Portrait has a few abrasions. Overall in very good condition, displaying beautifully. Sold for $3,366.

Very Scarce Hirohito World War II Dated Letter Signed

Excessively rare war-dated letter signed by the Emperor of Japan, Hirohito, and countersigned by Prince Fumimaro Konoye. From Tokyo dated 1939, Hirohito writes a letter of diplomacy to Peruvian President Oscar Benavides. Letter reads: “Hirohito, by the Grace of God, Emperor of Japan, and seated on the throne occupied by the same dynasty eternally, to his Excellency General Oscar Raymundo Benavides Larrea, President of the Republic of Peru. Great and good friend, it is with the joy of life that we have received the letter from your Excellency addressing your country’s economic and cultural visit to Japan, and we are happy knowing that you also wish to foster strong commercial ties between our countries. We are certain that the productive meeting of your Peruvian mission, presided by the eminent General Don Cesar de la Fuente, ex-minister of Foreign Affairs, and the people of our country will bear fruit in both economic and cultural terms, all of which will contribute to stronger and closer ties which will bind our friendship uniting Japan and Peru happily. We take this occasion to sincerely wish for your Excellency personal luck, and with that the prosperity of your nation. Your Good Friend, Hirohito”. Document is countersigned by Prince Fumimaro Konoe, Minister of Foreign Affairs at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo. Gold-trimmed two-page folio letter in Japanese kanji is accompanied by an original printed letter on official Imperial Japanese paper translating the document into French. Letter is moderately toned, with beautiful trim and calligraphy and a superb signature. Evidence of mounting on borders of verso, overall very good condition. Sold for $4,823.

Tractado de las drogas, y medicinas de las Indias Orien

Cristóvão da Costa or Cristóbal Acosta and Latinized as Christophorus Acosta Africanus (c. 1525 – c. 1594) was a Portuguese doctor and natural historian. He is considered a pioneer in the study of plants from the Orient, especially their use in pharmacology. Together with the apothecary Tomé Pires and the physician Garcia de Orta he was one of the pioneers of Indo-Portuguese medicine.

Rare 1578 first edition of “Tractado de las drogas, y medicinas de las Indias Orientales” (“Treatise of the drugs and medicines of the East Indies”) by physician and naturalist Cristobal Acosta. Burgos, Spain: Martin de Victoria, 1578. Bound in original vellum boards with leather ties, rare volume is complete with all woodcuts: title page featuring a portrait of the author, 45 pages of medicinal plants and herbs, and two pages of Asian elephants. Book also features woodcut initials heading each chapter. Acosta’s tomb of therapeutic botany was highly important in its day, giving illustration to exotic plants, animals, herbs and spices from the East Indies during the Age of Exploration, including cinnamon, garlic, nutmeg, coconut, sandalwood, and pineapple, all relatively unknown to Europe at the time. There is even a chapter on opium (“muy usual, y necessaria”), and a chapter on Asian elephants, then described for the first time in a scientific publication. Book measures 5.5″ x 7.375″. Some faint dampstaining, worming to several pages towards the end, and expected age wear. Overall very good plus condition. Sold for $3,900.

Japanese Emperor Hirohito Document Signed From 1932

Emperor Shōwa (昭和, 29 April 1901 – 7 January 1989), better known in English by his personal name Hirohito (裕仁), was the 124th emperor of Japan according to the traditional order of succession, ruling over the Empire of Japan from 25 December 1926 until 2 May 1947, after which he was Emperor of the state of Japan until his death. He was succeeded by his fifth child and eldest son, Akihito. Hirohito and his wife, Empress Kōjun, had seven children, two sons and five daughters. By 1979, Hirohito was the only monarch in the world with the title “emperor.” Hirohito was the longest-lived and longest-reigning historical Japanese emperor and one of the longest-reigning monarchs in the world.

Japanese Emperor Hirohito document signed from 1932. Formal document signed by the Emperor Showa, with Japanese calligraphic script, unfolds to measure 18″ x 12.5″. Punch holes, toning and a light flexible coating on the paper, perhaps removable. Overall in very good condition. Sold for $1,400.
