CSA General A.P. Hill 1863 Document Signed
Confederate General A.P. Hill signed document, datelined 5 October 1863 Near Rapidian, Virginia shortly before the Battle at Bristoe Station. Document grants 44th NC Infantry soldier John A. May a transfer for disability, and is also signed by Generals Henry “Harry” Heth, William Kirkland and Robert Hall Chilton. Signatures of Hill and Heth bold and easily readable; signatures of Chilton and Kirkland much lighter. Uniform toning is darker along lower margin of endorsement page, and very slight paper loss at bottom of endorsement page. Very good condition. Sold for $3,336.

Scarce William T. Sherman twice-signed copy of his Civil War Military Orders, collected and bound in this ”Military Orders of General William T. Sherman, 1861-’65”. Sherman inscribes both the cover and the title page to General Samuel W. Crawford, Civil War surgeon wounded at Antietam. Cover reads, ”To Gen. S.W. Crawford – / U.S. Army. / with compliments of W.T. Sherman / General.” Title page reads, ”To General S.W. Crawford / U.S. Army / with compliments of / W.T. Sherman / General. / Washington DC, / February 10, 1873.” First edition, published in 1869, in original green paper wrappers, runs 375pp. Book measures 5.25” x 8”. Wrappers soiled and lightly chipped, professionally restored to attach to book. Light soiling to interior pages but overall in very good condition, with no auction records of another copy signed by Sherman. Sold for $2,875.

General William T. Sherman signed CDV. Three-quarter portrait image of Sherman in uniform boldly signed to reverse, “W.T. Sherman / Maj Genl.” Backmark reads, “Carte de Visite by J. Carbutt, / Photographic Artist. / 131 Lake St. / Chicago.” Image measures 2.5″ x 4″. Overall toning and some soiling and edgewear. Very good condition. Sold for $1,807.

Rare Signature of Confederate General A.P. Hill
Bold signature of KIA Confederate General A.P. Hill, excised from a larger document and reads, “A.P. Hill / Lieut. 1st Art.” Measures 4″ x 1.75″. Accompanied by an engraving of Hill measuring 5.25″ x 7.75″. Sold for $1,730.

Confederate General A.P. Hill Twice-Check Signed — Dated March 1861 Just Before the Civil War Started
Confederate General A.P. Hill twice-signed check, addressed to himself, “A.P. Hill” and also signed by him, again as “A.P. Hill”. Holograph check is filled out by Hill for $30, dated 11 March 1861. Towards the end of the war, Hill said that he had no desire to live to see the collapse of the Confederacy and, indeed, was killed on 2 April 1865, just seven days before Lee’s surrender. Hill died on the front line at Petersburg after refusing to surrender to a Union solder. Check measures 6.75″ x 2.25″. Closed tear through the payee signature, perhaps as a bank cancellation, otherwise near fine condition. Sold for $1,666.

Large cabinet card boldly signed by General William Tecumseh Sherman. Signed “W.T. Sherman / General / 1888” on mount of photograph of Sherman in full military uniform. Imprint of photographer Napoleon Sarony in red font upon mount. Moderate wear to edges and margin, and chips to corners. Very good condition. Sold for $1,500.
