Steve McQueen
“There’s something about my shaggy-dog eyes that makes people think I’m good,” McQueen once said of himself.
Bad boy. Black Sheep. Rebel.
McQueen became one of the biggest anti-heroes in Hollywood history, loved for his ability to express the cultural and emotional zeitgeist of his era, as the counter-culture from the Vietnam War continued to be growing in the backdrop of his films.
His lead roles portrayed characters embodying this bad boy rebel vibe. From the “The Great Escape” to “The Thomas Crown Affair” to “Bullitt,” McQueen’s characters were complicated, always “a nonconformist and underdog, battling to survive in a hostile society,” as The New York Times put it in his obituary.
We’ve auctioned a plethora of McQueen items worn onscreen — many from his award-winning roles.
These McQueen sunglasses were screen-worn in the film ”Le Mans,” and sold for $11,858 at our Nate D. Sanders Auction House (http://www.NateDSanders.com).
We also auctioned this Steve McQueen Signed Passport from 1970. It sold for $12,076.
The passport debunks the mystery of McQueen’s real name — he writes his name incorrectly on purpose! The star’s real name “Steven Terrance McQueen,” was often wrongfully reported in the press as “Terrance Stephen McQueen”.
When in London applying for a new passport at the American Embassy, McQueen applied with “Terrance Stephen McQueen” to see if the press’ incorrect spelling would pass official government scrutiny, and it did.
To this day the press wrongfully reports McQueen’s first name as Terrance. McQueen playfully adds, “K.A. Steve McQueen” and the end result is, “Terrence Stephen McQueen K.A. Steve McQueen” printed on his official passport.
McQueen, as Michael Delaney, poignantly portrays the competitive atmosphere during the Battle of the Titans, or the 1970 24 Hours of Le Mans auto race.
