Rare Sigmund Freud Autograph Letter Signed on His Jewish Roots & Psychoanalysis — ”…the Freud family is said to sometime have left their hometown of Köln during a period of persecution of Jews…”

Unusually personal and autobiographical Sigmund Freud autograph letter signed, with content on Freud’s Jewish heritage and ancestry, the growth of psychoanalysis and the ”intense type of rejection” of it by psychiatrists, his marriage and children, and his professional writings and honorary degree; in essence, the whole of Freud’s life and career, as told in his own words. The content is especially important and unusual as Freud kept tight control over his autobiography, with this letter likely the most comprehensive detailing of it. He writes to fellow psychoanalyst Dr. Paul Federn, one of Freud’s earliest proteges, with Freud even dryly commenting in the beginning of his letter that his reluctance to answer Federn’s correspondence (by misplacing it) was ”most likely as a consequence of my resistance”. Dated 30 June 1913 upon his personal stationery from his home in Vienna. Sold for $25,000

Sigmund Freud Autograph Letter Signed in English — Freud Writes to His Nephew, the PR expert Edward Bernays, of Publishing a Book: ”…The title might be: Scraps of popular Psychoanalysis…”

Sigmund Freud autograph letter signed, composed in English, to his nephew Edward Bernays. Freud was close to his nephew, who is famous in his own right; Bernays is considered the “founder of the PR industry” and was an advocate of benevolent propaganda, using Freud’s psychological techniques to accomplish it. Datelined Vienna, 2 October 1920, Freud writes just as his psychoanalytic institutes were starting to take hold in Europe. In full, “Dear Edward / After my return from Holland I am glad to acknowledge your letter of Aug. 27th telling of the good sale of our translation. I had expected it would mean a piece of good business to you, but I realize from your letters and Felix’s account that it all goes to my profit, and I thank you heartily for this demonstration of kindness and helpfulness. / Now my appetite getting sharpened I propose to you the following arrangement which is likely to fall in with an offer of yours. I would promise to write, let us say: four popular papers a year for a certain review chosen by you and these articles, if successful, could be collected in the shape of a small book after some time. The title might be: Scraps of popular Psychoanalysis, or something alike. They are to be easy yet original. The first I intend to write down I might name: Don’t use [Greek letter psi]A in Polemics. As for the size it will depend on the subject, not too long generally. I will write in German but join an English version, which if not available itself, can guard the translator against serious mistakes. / I hope you will answer what you think of the project and how much it can bring deduction made for the cost of translation or correction etc. Also if the topic I mentioned as a sample seems a good one to you. / With kind love and thanks for your interest. / Your Uncle / freud.” Letter is beautifully presented in a double-sided frame that inserts into a larger frame. The front of the larger frame shows a sketch of Freud and opens to reveal the letter alongside its transcription. Visible portion of letter measures 5″ x 8″, framed to a size of 33.75″ x 18.75″ when displayed open. Fold and light creasing to letter, otherwise near fine. This Sigmund Freud Autograph Letter Signed sold for $11,000.
