We realized $32,500 for a Robert E Lee autograph letter signed to B.H. Wright dated on 18 January 1869. Letter has exceptional content and contains excerpts of Lee critiquing the Confederate Civil War strategy including the most prominent battles. Lee writes, “this failure of the Confederate army at Gettysburg was owing to a combination of circumstances but for which success might have been reasonably expected. It…seemed that Genl Burnside had good reasons for his move…to Fredericksburg & as far as I was able to judge the earlier arrival of his troops…would not have materially changed the result…all would only have produced an earlier concentration of the Confederate army at Fredericksburg. ” Lee is remembered for accepting the outcome of the Civil War with dignity and took much of the blame for the South’s defeat. Following the war he dedicated himself to rebuild the South and served as president of Washington College in Lexington, Virginia.
