Here is a Mark Sykes letter signed item we have sold in the past:
Sir Mark Sykes Letter Signed 1917 Balfour Declaration
Colonel Sir Tatton Benvenuto Mark Sykes, 6th Baronet (16 March 1879 – 16 February 1919) was an English traveller, Conservative Party politician, and diplomatic advisor, particularly with regard to the Middle East at the time of the First World War. He is associated with the Sykes–Picot Agreement, drawn up while the war was in progress regarding the partitioning of the Ottoman Empire by Britain, France and Russia, and was a key negotiator of the Balfour Declaration. Although a great supporter of Zionism during the First World War, his views changed in the year prior to his death.
Sir Mark Sykes letter signed during World War I. Letter is dated 2 June 1917, at which time Sykes was negotiating the language of the Balfour Declaration, in which Britain declared its support for a Jewish home in Palestine. A strong pro-Zionist at this time, Sykes’ guiding hand over the Declaration was critical to its eventual passage. Sykes here writes on Shepheard’s Hotel stationery in Cairo to “My Dear Littleton”, in part, “Please let me hasten to thank you very much indeed for all you did for our party on Thursday evening in connection with our journey to Cairo. / I tried to catch you before we left but you had just gone…[signed] Mark Sykes”. Single page letter measures 5.75″ x 7.5″. Folds, light wear and toning. Overall very good condition with a bold signature by Sykes. Sold for $1,600.
