NASA’s Lunar Orbiter program consisted of five uncrewed lunar orbiter missions with the primary objective of mapping the moon’s surface for sites that the Apollo missions could land on. The first successful NASA mission to orbit the moon included the Lunar Orbiter I Kodak camera. The camera featured Kodak 70mm film that could handle the harsh conditions of space as well as two lenses, a wide angle one and medium-resolution one. 1966 NASA Photo Showing the First View of Earth from Space
We realized $4,600 for a large format panoramic photo of the first view of Earth from space taken with the Lunar Orbiter I Kodak camera. Photo was taken on August 23, 1966 during the Lunar Orbiter I mission that was launched on August 10, 1966 and measures 19.5 x 7.375 inches. Reverse of photo has a piece of paper taped to it that reads, “Historic First Photo of Earth from Deep Space — taken by Kodak photo system in the NASA-Boeing Lunar Orbiter I, 12:35 P.M. EST, Aug. 23, 1966. Distance from Earth was 232,000 mi. The Orbiter was moving away from Earth at speed of about 3000 miles per hour and was about 750 miles above the back side of the moon. The 24-inch telephoto lens with a fixed focus of f/5.6, took the high resolution picture at a shutter speed 1/100th of a second.”

Apollo 8 launched on December 21, 1968 and was the first crewed mission to orbit the moon. Astronauts Frank Borman, Bill Anders and Jim Lovell helped prove that NASA could handle a lunar landing and became the first humans to experience “Earthrise”. We sold an Apollo 8 Earthrise ”Red number” AS8-14-2383 photo printed on “A Kodak Paper” for $21,875. Photo measures 8 x 10 inches and is encapsulated by PSA.

Lot of 12 NASA Photos, All on ”A Kodak Paper”
We sold a lot of twelve vintage NASA chromogenic photos printed on ”A Kodak Paper” for $15,000. Ten of these photos have ”red numbers” along margin and all measure 10 x 8 inches. Lot includes the iconic Earthrise photo (AS8-14-2384) taken by Bill Anders on Apollo 8, an Apollo 11 photo of Buzz Aldrin on the lunar surface and Ed White carrying out the first EVA spacewalk among other images from the Apollo and Gemini missions.

We realized $12,500 for the historic AS11-40-5903 photo of Buzz Aldrin taken by Neil Armstrong during the Apollo 11 mission. This important photo captures humankind’s first steps on the moon as well as immortalizes both Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong, whose reflection is visible in Aldrin’s visor, in a single photo.

Lot of 20 NASA Photos Including 18 Red Number Images
We sold a collection of 20 NASA photos printed on “A Kodak Paper” from the Apollo 11, 12, Gemini 4 and 6A missions for $10,721. Lot includes the desirable AS11-40-5877 photo of Buzz Aldrin’s bootprint in the lunar soil and the striking AS11-36-5353 Earthrise image snapped by Michael Collins while he orbited the Moon on the Apollo 11 mission.

We sold an AS11-40-5868 photo printed on “A Kodak Paper” of Buzz Aldrin on the Moon with PSA encapsulation for $7,375. Image depicts Aldrin in his EMU spacesuit coupled with a Portable Life Support System on his back as he descends the ladder of the Lunar Module onto the lunar surface. Photo was taken by Neil Armstrong and is among the most reproduced images from the Apollo 11 mission.
