Six Page Autograph Letter Twice Signed by J.D. Salinger
We sold a remarkable J.D. Salinger autograph letter written to his friend Terry (Mrs. Frances Thierolf “Terry” Glassmoyer) during his WWII service in 1944 for $14,500. Terry and Salinger met at Ursinus College and she was the inspiration for his Franny Glass character in “Franny and Zooey”. Salinger makes mention of his short stories “Boy Standing in Tennessee” and “I’m Crazy”, which is the forerunner to “The Catcher in the Rye” and introduces the character Holden Caulfield. Conclusion of this six page letter is signed “Jerry” and “Cpl. J.D. Salinger” is signed at head of first page.

The Catcher in the Rye is a coming of age story that was originally published in serialized format, as well as segments of the book published as short stories in magazines, before it was released as a novel in 1951. The protagonist and narrator of the book, a teen named Holden Caulfield, struggles with identity and authenticity as he transitions to a young man. Readers believe Holden’s character is partially based on Salinger as he navigated young adulthood. We sold a J.D. J.D. Salinger Typed Letter Signed from 1966
We sold a J.D. Salinger typed letter signed that was composed during a trip to Bermuda and is dated 14 May 1966 for $9,424. The three page letter is written to Carrol Roderick in Hampshire, England and content includes Salinger’s views on American policies in Vietnam as well as his opinions on other political matters in the U.S. and England.

We realized $9,375 for a lot of three typed letters J.D. Salinger sent to aspiring author, Rose-Ellen Currie. One letter is three pages in length written in 1958 and signed “Jerry”, another single page letter is signed “JDS” in type and the last letter is a half page critique of one of Currie’s stories. The three page letter from 1958 is among the most unique of the Salinger letters we’ve featured and consists of very thoughtful advice he has for Currie and her writing career.
