State dinners by the Reagan administration had become quite large that china from several administrations had to be combined to accommodate all the guests. First Lady Nancy Reagan ordered a 4,370 piece china set from Lenox, inspired by Woodrow Wilson’s china, that contained 220 placesettings. The set cost a reported $209,508 which was paid for by a donation from the J.P. Knapp Foundation.

Reagan White House China by Lenox — Large Service Plate in Red-Gold Design, Made for State Dinners
Beautiful Lenox china service plate made for the Reagan White House, in ”Reagan red” and gold, with an elegant cross-hatch design, the more formal style of china specifically used for state dinners, introduced on 3 February 1982. Plate features the Presidential seal in gilt at center, with Lenox mark on underside reading, ”For Lenox China, Inc. / Lenox / Made In U.S.A. / The White House / 1981”. Plate measures 11.625” in diameter. Near fine condition. Sold for $4,431.
Ronald Reagan White House China Plate — ”THE WHITE HOUSE / 1981”
Beautiful Lenox china plate from the Reagan White House, in their signature colors of red and gold. Salad plate is adorned with the Presidential seal in gilt at top and marked on the back, ”LENOX / MADE IN U.S.A. / THE WHITE HOUSE / 1981”. Ordered by Nancy Reagan, this service was first used on 3 February 1982 at the state dinner for Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. Mrs. Reagan was criticized at the time for spending money on the service, but she would otherwise have had to use mis-matching china. President Truman’s daughter, Margaret Truman came to her defense by saying ”When the President and First Lady give a state dinner, the china should match.” This plate is actually from the service used in the White House and not one of the exhibit pieces. Measures 8.375” in diameter. Near fine condition. Sold for $1,250.

Ronald Reagan White House China for Use on Air Force One, Camp David and the White House — Fine
Presidential china from the Reagan White House. Though Reagan’s china for State dinners was a red and gold pattern by Lenox, the collection used aboard Air Force One, at Camp David and at the White House are of this design by Fitz & Floyd. White porcelain double-handled bowl and saucer feature bands of navy blue, red and gilt around borders, with gilt presidential seal on the bowl at 6 o’clock. Each piece is stamped underneath, ”White House Service / by Robert C. Floyd / Fitz & Floyd, Inc. / Fine China / 1983”. Bowl measures 4.5” in diameter across the mouth and just over 2” in height. Saucer measures 7” in diameter. Fine condition. With a photo of the service in use, showing Reagan and Bush seated at the table, and a photocopy of a typed letter signed by Reagan to Mr. Floyd thanking him for the china. Its text reads, ”Let me express my sincere gratitude for the magnificent crested china to be used in the White House, at Camp David and aboard Air Force One. The workmanship is outstanding, and I deeply appreciate the time and skill you and your staff devoted to crafting these fine pieces of china. Your gift will be a welcome addition to the White House and will always serve as a special reminder of your friendship…” Sold for $1,210.

Limited edition china dessert bowl made for the Reagan administration by china makers Robert C. Floyd. This Floyd design of china service was used at the White House, aboard Air Force One and also at Camp David. Design features a white center with cobalt blue rim adorned with a gilt Presidential seal and gilt edge, with rings of brick red and gilt encircling the center. Measures 7.5″ in diameter. Manufacturers stamp on the verso in gilt reads, “White House Service / by Robert C. Floyd, Inc. / Fine China / 1983”. Measures 5.5″ in diameter with a 1.25″ basin. Fine. Sold for $789.
