Impressive set of nine eyeglasses owned and worn by nine U.S. Presidents, with many accompanied by signed photos and letters from the Presidents. Set includes eyeglasses worn by nearly every post-WWII President, including: Harry S. Truman, Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, all gifted to the Museum of Ophthalmology, and each framed in its own presentation shadowbox.
Pair of the ”Great Communicator’s” eyeglasses, owned and worn by President Ronald Reagan. Glasses are framed with a lovely letter signed ”Ronald Reagan” from 1 December 1994 on Reagan’s stationery that reads in part, ”It is my pleasure to submit my personal reading glasses for your exhibit…I have lived a very long and full life and been richly blessed with overall good health. While my eyes have always been sharp…these days…my eyes need a little more help and I use these spectacles. Having been a voracious reader since I was a little boy, I simply couldn’t allow this precious gift to be taken from me. / So with my trusty glasses a whole new, vivid world is opened up to me. They bring the pages of my books alive, a lovely softness to the face of my Nancy, and a renewed appreciation for the beauty of a brilliant California day.” Lot also includes a photo of Reagan wearing a similar or the exact pair of eyeglasses, working in his Fox Plaza, Los Angeles office. Personal Optics Mauritius reading glasses with amber colored plastic frames measure 5.375” from endpiece to endpiece. Shadowbox frame measures 29.5” x 21.25” x 3.25” deep, in near fine condition. Large collection of eyeglasses belonging to U.S. Presidents and world leaders, including a pair belonging to Ronald Reagan, along with Reagan’s autograph letter signed, and accompanying signed envelope. Composed on his Yearling Row ranch stationery, where Reagan lived from 1951-1966, the 40th President writes to Dr. Bagley in full, ”Since I’m now a wearer of Corneal Lens’ this is the best I can do. / These broken parts are all that remain except for one spare pair I keep on hand in addition to my ‘Corneals’. / Best Regards / Ronald Reagan”. Letter is undated but accompanied by original envelope handwritten by Reagan, signed ”R. Reagan / Pacific Palisades Calif.” with a postmark from either 1962 or 1963. Letter is addressed to Dr. Melvin J. Bagley, who assembled this large collection for ”The Famous People’s Eyeglasses Museum”, which he founded.
The lot also includes letters from individuals declining sending a pair of eyeglasses, including a letter from Eleanor Roosevelt who writes, ”I wish I could send you a pair of eye glasses for your collection. Unfortunately, however, I do not have any except the ones I am now using for reading…[signed] Eleanor Roosevelt”. Each pair of glasses is labeled in its own case, compiled by Dr. Bagley beginning in the 1960s through the 1980s, most in very good condition. Lot also includes a copy of his book, ”Celebrity Sighting”. A very unique and personal collection of memorabilia worn by the most influential leaders of the world. Sold for $15,699.

Fully functional in near fine condition with only light rubbing, indicating use by America’s beloved 40th President. Originally sold at Christie’s, still retaining the lotting tag. Sold for $6,693.

Published in 2001 by Dorling Kindersley, in concert with Tehabi Books and the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation, oversized picture book bound in deep brown leather features four raised bands to spine, gilt lettering and a Great Seal in bronze-colored metal to front cover. 271pp. book documents Reagan’s life as a young man to his political career as Governor, and his Presidency with Nancy beside him as First Lady. Books comes housed in an engraved wood case, lushly lined in navy blue velvet and satin, with the original four commemorative coins completing the set. This rare deluxe edition comes bound in blue leather boards with a ribbed spine, and gilt lettering and design. All edges gilt with marbled endpapers and a satin bookmark sewn into the binding. The complete six-cassette audio series is also part of the set. The hinged lid of the case lifts to reveal the book nestled in blue velvet lining. The cassette tapes are housed in a drawer underneath. Box measures 16.5” wide by 11” deep and 4.75” tall. Features metal handles on the sides and a metal presidential seal to the lid. Ronald Reagan Rare Autograph Letter as President With Great Chicago Cubs Baseball Content
Autograph letter signed as President on White House stationery, no date but circa the summer of 1988, to the wife of Chicago Cubs great, Charlie Grimm. Ronald Reagan grew up outside of Chicago and lived there until sometime in the 1930’s. Grimm was a first baseman and manager in Major League Baseball best known for his years with the Wrigley family owned Chicago Cubs. As a manager for the Cubs, he led the team to National League championships in 1932, 1935 and 1945. He was brought out of retirement to direct the Cubs again in early 1960, but the team got off to a slow start, and owner P.K. Wrigley swapped Grimm with another former manager, Lou Boudreau. Grimm died in Scottsdale, Arizona at age 85, from cancer. His widow, who this letter is written to was granted permission to spread his ashes on Wrigley Field. In the Presidential letter, Reagan writes, “Dear Marion, It’s good to hear from you & to know you are all settled back in Ill. I wonder if Mr. Wrigley will look down on the upcoming night game at Wrigley Field and protest its happening. He was totally against night ball. Nancy thanks you for your kind words & so do I. We’ll be looking forward to your book. (Forgive the blob) Give our best to Deedie. All the best, Ron.” Excellent condition. Sold for $3,000.

Russian box from the personal collection of President Ronald and Nancy Reagan, owned and used by them in the Presidential years at the Family Residence in the White House and then at their Bel Air, California home. Beautiful black lacquered box features gilt accenting an artistic rendering of the Moscow Holy Danilov Monastery, where Reagan visited in 1988. Top opens to reveal a red lacquered interior. The box was likely obtained during the Reagans historic trip to Russia during the 1988 Moscow Summit. Upon leaving the White House, the Reagans marked their possessions with a green sticker to designate which of their belongings had been displayed with them during their Presidential years; this box has this round green sticker on its underside. Markings upon the box translate from Russian as “Moscow Holy Danilov Monastery”. Box was originally sold at Christie’s in New York, and has Christie’s sticker. Measures 7″ x 5″. Light rubbing to a few corners, otherwise near fine condition. Sold for $1,776.

Trimmed in ”Reagan Red” and gilt, bowl is the Reagan White House-style pattern, with the Lenox mark on underside, as well as ”Christmas in 1986”. Front of bowl also features the gilt facsimile signatures of Ronald and Nancy Reagan, along with a pictorial depiction of the White House. Bowl measures 9” in diameter and 3.75” high. In part: “…bless you for what you had to say. I’m sure you’ll be pleased to know that scores of those people she lists as informants have gotten in touch and told me they’ve never met her or communicated any of those stories she claims to have heard from them…Sincerely – Ron.” Soiling to lower left corner, otherwise very good. Salad plate is adorned with the Presidential seal in gilt at top and marked on the back, ”LENOX / MADE IN U.S.A. / THE WHITE HOUSE / 1981”. Ordered by Nancy Reagan, this service was first used on 3 February 1982 at the state dinner for Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. Mrs. Reagan was criticized at the time for spending money on the service, but she would otherwise have had to use mis-matching china. President Truman’s daughter, Margaret Truman came to her defense by saying ”When the President and First Lady give a state dinner, the china should match.” This plate is actually from the service used in the White House and not one of the exhibit pieces. Measures 8.375” in diameter. Near fine condition. Sold for $1,250.
