As one of England’s most notorious monarchs, Richard III earned a reputation for himself that has spanned centuries — few can forget those famous lines penned by Shakespeare as he theatrically accused Richard III as prime suspect in the murder of the young Edward V and Richard Duke of York, or as history remembers them, the “Princes in London Tower,” in his famous 1592 play, “Richard III”:
- Now is the winter of our discontent
- Made glorious summer by this sun of York;
- And all the clouds that lour’d upon our house
- In the deep bosom of the ocean buried.
As art often imitates life, Richard III has indeed been known as one of England’s most controversial rulers — after his short-lived reign as King of England, he was left for dead on August 22, 1485 at the Battle of Bosworth Field in England’s East Midlands. Stripped of royal burial because many believed him to be the murderer of the young boys, his remains were lost for more than five centuries — until now.
With the recent news that Richard III’s bones were found under a parking lot in Leicester, England, it has been concluded that the DNA was in fact his. The mystery of Richard III’s remains has forever been solved.

Coincidentally, we have been sold a Richard III document signed in March for $52,417.20.
Originally sealed with a signet ring, here Richard III boldly signs the document “R. Gloucestre” as Duke of Gloucester, circa 1473. Richard III was appointed Lord President of the Council of the North by his brother, Edward IV. As Duke of Gloucester in his early 20’s, he was given many responsibilities by his brother, becoming a powerful landowner and political force to be reckoned with in the north, further establishing his future reign as King of England.
The document illuminates his growing power as he hereby intervenes on a land dispute between Ralph Neville, 2nd Earl of Westmorland and some of his tenants, asking that they examine the petitioners and settle the dispute according to their own discretion,
“so th[a]t neyther p[ar]tie have cause to sue unto us for remedy in that behalve heraft[er].”
