In our December 2012 auction, we were proud to offer French Impressionist master Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s original pen and ink drawing with ink wash of a young girl with a hat, entitled ”Fillette”. The drawing, created circa 1882, is signed with the initial, ”R”. It sold for an incredible $65,959.20.
The impressionist movement sought to depict light in its changing qualities (often accentuating the effects of the passage of time), to emphasize movement in often ordinary, every-day-life depictions.
Renoir became one of the groundbreaking founders in the movement. He began as an apprentice in a porcelain factory, painting delicate plates, and from there, began to cultivate a personal sense of style with his palette and canvas — a style that seemed to be impressioned, pun intended, by those painters he spent time with, as well as the places he traveled.

From Algiers to Madrid, Florence to Paris, Renoir pulled inspiration from a wide range of his predecessors, traveling around Europe as a young artist.
His fame began to take off — along with other Impressionist painters, including Monet, Degas and Cezanne — when his work was represented in the first Impressionist Exhibition in 1874.
He is forever known for his free brush strokes and the warm sensuality present in the light and color of his palette. Two of Renoir’s most famous paintings, ”Luncheon of the Boating Party” and ”Girl With a Hoop”, were completed during the early 1880’s when this drawing was made.
Though he is known for his canonical Impressionist paintings, depicting realist scenes of people at work and play, he began as his career moved along, to paint in a more disciplined, formal technique, more often painting women and girls, particularly after seeing artist Raphael’s works in Italy.
We could surmise as to who the young girl in the painting is; when, where and why Renoir chose to paint her, but as Renoir said himself,
“Art is about emotion; if art needs to be explained it is no longer art.”
