Raymond Jonson “Polymer No. 9, 1973”
Raymond Jonson painting, “Polymer No. 9, 1973.” Acrylic polymer on canvas. Signed and dated to lower center, “Jonson 73.” A quintessential piece from the latter period of the artist’s long and varied career. Jonson’s formal artistic training began in Chicago, where he studied at the Chicago Art Institute under modernist B.J.O. Nordfeldt, but he soon left the city for the proximity to nature of Santa Fe. The jagged quality of the New Mexico landscape inspired Jonson to focus on abstraction based in natural forms. In 1938, with modernist Emil Bisttram, Jonson co-founded the influential Transcendental Painting Group. The group’s aim was to explore spirituality via abstract and non-objective art, and its members included artists Agnes Pelton, William Lumpkins, and Stuart Walker. The start of World War II meant the end of the Group, but Jonson continued to dedicate himself to abstract art. It was in the 1960’s that he found his true medium: acrylics. “Polymer No. 9, 1973″ is an excellent example of Jonson’s stunning work from this period. In contrast to painting done with a brush or palette knife, the piece shows no trace or touch of the human hand; in this way, the artist achieves total control over the surface. Jonson wields this control expertly, achieving subtle and varied effects through modulation of color. The unique artist-designed frame underscores Jonson’s desire to control the artistic process entirely. Provenance: Gerald Peters Gallery (label attached to verso). Painting measures 40″ x 30” and is in excellent condition, with no restoration or in-painting. Minor soiling to upper left corner and very small dent to canvas near lower edge. Frame shows minor edgewear and soiling but is in otherwise excellent condition. Sold for $3,055.
