Prince Memorabilia Auction
In March 2016, we were approached by Prince’s first wife, Mayte Garcia, and one of the earliest managers of Prince, from the 1970’s, Owen Husney, with a Prince played acoustic guitar, Prince stage worn costumes, Prince handwritten lyrics, etc. We put together a nice Prince memorabilia auction for Mayte and Owen, but Prince sued and claimed that Mayte didn’t have proper ownership of the Prince stage worn costumes and claimed that Owen didn’t have legal possession of the rare Prince handwritten lyrics, etc. even though Owen says that Prince gave it to him as a birthday present. Rather than get involved in an expensive legal battle with the Purple One, we withdrew all of our Prince stage worn costumes and Mayte and Owen picked their items up from us. However, for the few remaining Prince memorabilia items that Prince did not claim ownership to, we sold them for big money and well established that we have big spending Prince memorabilia buyers. A few weeks after we capitulated to Prince, he died. After the auction, we had other Prince memorabilia that sold for five figures. When we had our Prince auction just before his death, even though we had massive publicity for the Prince memorabilia auction including Rolling Stone magazine, it seemed that hardly anyone cared or had money to buy Prince memorabilia. He was a star from thirty years ago in the current world of Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber. But, when he passed, Prince memorabilia skyrocketed and the big spenders came out and that still holds true today. If only, we had the auction, the month after his death, rather than the month before his death, we probably wouldn’t have been sued and his stage worn costumes that had trouble selling at around $10,000 – $30,000, might have brought in up to $100,000 each. Please see our best price realized from our Prince memorabilia auction and afterwards:
