Porfirio Salinas painting of “El Cordobes” by the famed Texas artist; signed at lower left and titled at upper right. Intriguing still-life captures the matador’s moment of victory in vibrant shades of red, yellow and purple. Porfirio Salinas grew up in the San Antonio area, learning much of his craft from Texas artists Jose Arpa, Robert Wood and Helen Slimp. During the 1940’s Salinas attracted the attention of Lyndon Johnson, an avid collector of his works. The cities of Austin and Bastrop currently honor Salinas with festivals celebrating his works. Oil on canvas measures 16″ x 20″; framed, 22″ x 26″. An excellent example of Salinas’ works, known for celebrating the cultures of both Mexico and Texas. Sold for $2,100
Early Porfirio Salinas painting. Measures 9″ x 7″; framed, 18.25″ x 16.25″. Canvas signed to lower left. Salinas was born and raised in San Antonio and painted in Texas all his life. Though he was primarily self-taught, he also studied painting with Jose Arpa, Robert Wood and Helen Slimp. His Texas Hill Country landscapes drew wide acclaim during his lifetime, even attracting the attention of fellow Texan Lyndon Johnson, who became an avid collector of Salinas’ works. More than thirty years after his death, Salinas remains one of the most celebrated Texas artists. This piece, titled in pencil to verso, “Painting of White and Gold,” shows a flowered meadow and a wide country road beneath a cloud-filled sky. Minor separation at joints of frame, otherwise sturdy. A great early Salinas piece in fine condition. Sold for $4,050
