Pope Pius XI autograph letter signed, ”Achille Ratti” as a Cardinal. Letter issues a pass to refuse to fight in WWI. Datelined Rome in 1917, letter is written on Vatican stationery presumably in Italian. Pius XI was the first sovereign of Vatican City. Single-page letter features a date stamp from the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana. Fragile sheet measures 8.5” x 10.75”. Toning, wormhole near signature and scattered minor tears, else very good.

Pope Pius XI Photo Portrait Mounted to a Signed Illuminated Papal Blessing
Photo of Pope Pius XI mounted to an illuminated calligraphic blessing signed, ”Pius pp. XI”. Black and white photo portrait depicts the Pope wearing a white pileolus or zuccheto and dark robe with light color trim. Photo is mounted and signed on the mat ”G. Felici, Roma” by the photographer Giuseppe Felici. Colorful benediction with gilt embellishments reads, ”Most Holy Father / Nettie Auerbacher prostrate at the feet of Your Holiness begs the Apostolic Benediction”. To the left is an embossed Vatican seal reading ”PONT MAX / PIUS XI”. Photo measures 4” x 5.5”. Benediction measures 9” x 13”. Light toning and pencil notations to verso, else near fine. Sold for $625.
Pope Pius XI Signed Photo Display Measuring 14” x 20”
Pope Pius XI signed photo display, a sensitive portrait of 259th pope extending his right hand to give a blessing. Pope Piux XI signs the white mat underneath the photo, ”Pius P P. XI”. To left of signature is the pope’s circular papal coat of arms, which is raised on the surface. 7.75” x 10.5” photo is affixed to mat measuring 14” x 20”. Minor creasing to top edge and left corner, otherwise near fine. Sold for $375.
