Pope Pius X (Italian: Pio X; born Giuseppe Melchiorre Sarto; 2 June 1835 – 20 August 1914) was head of the Catholic Church from August 1903 to his death in 1914. Pius X is known for vigorously opposing modernist interpretations of Catholic doctrine, promoting liturgical reforms and orthodox theology. He directed the production of the 1917 Code of Canon Law, the first comprehensive and systemic work of its kind.

Pope Pius X Photo Display Signed
Pope Saint Pius X photo display signed, ”Pius P.P. X”. Photo portrait of the Catholic leader in papal regalia is mounted to signed mat. Mat credits the image to Filli Alinari, Firenze. Portrait is embossed, ”Depose”. Measures 4.25” x 5.5” on 7.75” x 9.75” mat. Toning, fading and pencil notations to verso. Very good. Sold for $1,563.

Color photo of a benevolent looking Pope John Paul II with signed mat. Clad in red robes in the photo, the leader signs the mat below the image in blue ink, ”Joannes Paulus pp. II. / 25.I.1983”. Measures 18.5” x 17.5”. Near fine. Sold for $3,000.
Pope Pius XI autograph letter signed, ”Achille Ratti” as a Cardinal. Letter issues a pass to refuse to fight in WWI. Datelined Rome in 1917, letter is written on Vatican stationery presumably in Italian. Pius XI was the first sovereign of Vatican City. Single-page letter features a date stamp from the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana. Fragile sheet measures 8.5” x 10.75”. Toning, wormhole near signature and scattered minor tears, else very good. Sold for $2,680.

Photo of Pope Pius XI mounted to an illuminated calligraphic blessing signed, ”Pius pp. XI”. Black and white photo portrait depicts the Pope wearing a white pileolus or zuccheto and dark robe with light color trim. Photo is mounted and signed on the mat ”G. Felici, Roma” by the photographer Giuseppe Felici. Colorful benediction with gilt embellishments reads, ”Most Holy Father / Nettie Auerbacher prostrate at the feet of Your Holiness begs the Apostolic Benediction”. To the left is an embossed Vatican seal reading ”PONT MAX / PIUS XI”. Photo measures 4” x 5.5”. Benediction measures 9” x 13”. Light toning and pencil notations to verso, else near fine. Sold for $625.
