Planet of the Apes is a 1968 American science fiction film directed by Franklin J. Schaffner and loosely based on the 1963 French novel La Planète des Singes by Pierre Boulle. Roddy McDowell’s Screen-Worn Planet of the Apes Costume
Roddy McDowell’s screen-worn Planet of the Apes costume from 1968. Morton Haack was Oscar-nominated for costume design for this iconic picture. The 4-piece ape suit bears the label of legendary Hollywood wardrobe design house Western Costume. McDowell’s name is hand-written on the label with production number 2771-1, with the wardrobe department’s tag still attached. Green and brown cotton ensemble comprises a tunic, pants, and undergarment. Near fine. With provenance from Profiles in History. Sold for $9,582.
Mark Hamill’s Screen-Worn Hero Pants in the Original 1977 ”Star Wars” as Luke Skywalker
Screen-worn ”hero” costume pants worn by Mark Hamill in his career-defining role as Luke Skywalker in the 1977 epic film ”Star Wars”, the first in the groundbreaking trilogy. As one of the top-grossing films of all time, George Lucas’ first film in the successful series won six Oscars, among many other awards. In a galaxy far, far away, Hamill donned these iconic pants as the Jedi Knight of all Jedi Knights, wearing the costume pants throughout much of the film. Sand-colored ”cotton drill” Levi’s pants are purposely distressed to display wear, with dirt to back right pocket and in spots to front of pant legs. In fact, in an accompanying article, Mark Hamill said of the pants, ”By the way, those pants I wore were just bleached Levi’s with the tag still in them.” Pants measure 29” waist x 37” in length with two 6” slits up each side. Customized by the famous London costumier, Bermans & Nathans, original tag sewn to inseam reads: ”Bermans & Nathans / 40 Camden St., / London N.W. 1” tag with a ”Mark Hamill / 10490 Luke / Star Wars” printed in type beneath it. Very good condition overall. Also with tags attached from both Christie’s, where the pants were originally auctioned, and Sotheby’s, from its 1998 auction. Sold for $60,000.
Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith screen-worn black suits and prop weapons from ”Men in Black II”. Extensive lot from the hit UFO franchise includes the iconic black suits worn by Tommy Lee Jones as Agent Kay and by Will Smith as Agent Jay. Pair of suits were tailor-made for the actors by acclaimed costume designer John David Ridge. ”Mr. Tommy Lee Jones” is typed to the labels of his jacket and pants, as is ”Mr. Will Smith” on the labels of his jacket and pants. Both suits include a white cotton dress shirt, custom made by Anto of Beverly Hills. Shirts feature monograms embroidered in blue thread to the labels, ”T.L.J.” and ”W.S.”, respectively. Shirt labels are dated June 2001 in type. Ensembles are complete with unlabeled black neckties and velvet pocket squares. Wardrobe is accompanied by the pieces de resistance, Agent Kay & Jay’s giant alien-blasting weapons. Impressive pieces are made of solid rubber finished in silver paint. Agent Kay’s single-barrel weapon in silver, with green at the top measures a whopping 40” in length. Agent Jay’s tri-barrel weapon measures 31.5”. Will Smith’s jacket and trousers feature small holes for his wire harness to pass through, with labels inscribed ”Harness” in ink, and the letters ”FC” are handwritten to his shirt label. Some scuffing to props and tearing to the back of Jones’ shirt, else lot is near fine overall. With a COA from Prop Store and a copy of costume department’s info sheet. Sold for $25,428.
Uniform that astronaut Gus Grissom would have worn in space for the Apollo 1 mission. Tragically, Grissom and his crewmates Edward White and Roger Chaffee were killed while preparing for Apollo 1 when the spacecraft caught fire during a launch pad test. Virgil ”Gus” Grissom was one of the Mercury 7, the first group of pilots chosen by NASA to become astronauts. As commander of Gemini 3 he was the second American ever to fly into space. This two-piece inflight coverall set was designed for wear onboard the spacecraft as part of the A1C style spacesuit, a modified version of the Gemini G3C, manufactured by David Clark. After the disaster NASA designed the fireproof A7L spacesuit. Label sewn within the jacket reads: ”JACKET, INFLIGHT COVERALL / NASA Designation AC-1C-1 T / Mfg. David Clark Co., Inc. / P/N A-2006-000 Ser. No. 101 / Grissom June 66”. Zip-front jacket features numerous pockets designed to hold writing implements and a slide rule. Apollo 1 mission insignia patch, V.I. Grissom name tag and American flag adorn the upper. Sleeves measure 21” in length from shoulder seam to cuff; the shoulder measures 18” across the seam, and the collar to the bottom measures 22.5” at the back. Approximately a men’s size small. Fine condition. The label in the waistband of the pants reads: ”TROUSER, INFLIGHT COVERALL / NASA Designation AC-1C-1 T / Mfg. David Clark Co., Inc. / P/N A-2007-000 Ser. No. 101 / Grissom June 66”. Pants zip up and have adjustable button closures on the sides and numerous cargo pockets and zippered cuffs. Measures 32” at the waist with a 26” inseam. Near fine. Originally from Grissom’s personal collection. Sold for $16,218.
George Hamilton Signed Evel Knievel Suit — From Production of Biographical Film ”Evel Knievel” Starring Hamilton as The Motorcycle Hero
Leather jumpsuit signed by George Hamilton, who stars as daredevil Evel Knievel in the 1971 biopic. Jumpsuit is made in Knievel’s signature style and inscribed in black felt tip across the left ribcage area, ”Evel / ‘It’s going to be glorious’ / George Hamilton”. A Harley-Davidson logo is affixed to left shoulder. The motorcycle stuntman was known for favoring the company’s XR-750 model. Suit features a blue band with white stars and red trim across the hip and in a chevron arrangement across the chest. The brand label, ”Evel” is made of gilt leather, with gilt leather and gem accents to cuffs. A white rabbit’s foot serves as a zipper pull. Measures 23” across the chest with a 34” inseam. Black smudges to verso, else near fine. Excellent Evel Knievel memorabilia. Sold for $3,750.
