Sell Your Pinocchio Courvoisier Walt Disney Signed Cel
Disney’s classic film Pinocchio was released in 1940 as the studio’s second animated feature film. The story was based on the Italian children’s novel The Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi and revolves around a wood carver named Geppetto who creates the puppet Pinocchio. A fairy brings Pinocchio to life and he proves himself worthy of remaining a real-life boy by being “brave, truthful, and unselfish”. The film won two Oscars for Best Music, Original Score and for Best Music, Original Song and was the first animated film to win an Oscar.
We at Nate D. Sanders Auctions sold an original Courvoisier cel signed by Walt Disney for $12,000. Please see details below:
Walt Disney signed animation cel used in Disney’s 1940 classic “Pinocchio”, the groundbreaking follow-up to the first full length Disney animated film, ”Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”. Very large cel, featuring Pinocchio & Jiminy Cricket, measures 4.5″ x 5.5″, with original background measuring 7.5″ by 9.5″, and mat measuring 15″ x 16″ upon which Disney signs, “To Gorden Crier / Best Wishes / Walt Disney”. Disney gifted Gordon Crier the cel after Crier produced a BBC program about Disney in the late 1940s, at the conclusion of which Disney asked Crier what his favorite cartoon was, to which Crier replied, “Pinocchio”. With Courvoisier Galleries sticker affixed to backing certifying that both the background and cel were used in the filming of “Pinocchio”. Walt Disney Productions stamp appears on mat, above Disney’s signature, reading “original / WDP”. Uniform toning to mat and small amount of abrasion to edges. Cel itself is near fine. With an LOA from Crier’s daughter and a COA from Phil Sears. A rare, special Disney signed cel from one of the classics in animated film, also unusual for its size. Sold for $12,000.
The following are some additional Disney cels we sold:
Walt Disney signed display of Bambi and Thumper cels, uniquely inscribed to fellow American icon Norman Rockwell, and on an original production background also used in the movie. Disney signs the mat in green wax crayon, ”To Norman / With Best Wishes / Walt”. Large display includes cels of Bambi, Thumper, two quail birds, grass and log, used in the 1942 classic film ”Bambi”, with the hand-painted background measuring approximately 11” x 9”, framed to a size of 19.375” x 17.5”. With ”Original WDP [Walt Disney Productions]” stamp above Disney’s signature. Some foxing and light discoloration to outer portion of mat. Cels remain in beautifully well-preserved condition, with only one hairline crack appearing on Bambi’s leg. With an LOA from Carl Sprague of Stockbridge, Massachusetts, Norman Rockwell’s town, whose wife Susan Merrill was previously marred to Jarvis Rockwell, Norman Rockwell’s son. Sold for $13,401.
Original animation cel from Disney’s 1937 classic ”Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” featuring the most famous moment in the film, the Queen in her old hag disguise handing Snow White the famed poisoned apple. Snow White is portrayed in her iconic gown and with a red bow in her hair, innocently looking at the bright red apple. With ”Snow White and the Witch” handwritten in cursive pencil to left side mat below cel, along with, ”Original / WDP (Walt Disney Pictures)” in ink to bottom right. Cel measures 11” x 7.5”, matted in white with a gilt color frame to an overall size of 20” x 16”. Cel is pristine and in fine condition. With a COA from the Ray Bradbury estate. Sold for $15,000.
