Manuscript Signed by Philip K. Dick on How to Write a Novel — Unpublished 5pp. Manuscript by Dick Outlines “This is how I write a book”
Philip K. Dick typed manuscript signed on how to write a novel. Interesting five page original manuscript was created for fellow science fiction author Ron Goulart circa 1965, and goes into great detail outlining how Dick develops his characters, the obstacles they face, and how multiple storylines intertwine. Entitled “The novel”, Dick ends the manuscript with the following paragraph, “Addendum. I am not saying, <> I am saying, <> The two propositions are rather a bit different, would you not say? Anyhow, dearly beloved, this is how PKD gets 55,000 words (the adequate mileage) out of his typewriter: by have [sic] 3 persons, 3 levels, 2 themes (one outer or world-sized, the other inner or individual-sized), with a melding of all, then, at last, a humane final note. This is, so to speak, my structure. ‘Nuf said. / Philip K. Dick / [signed] Phil Dick”. Five pages on five sheets measures 8.5″ x 11″. Light toning, and rust from paperclip impression at top of pages. First edition of “The Man in the High Castle” by Philip K. Dick, which won the prestigious Hugo award in 1963 and was adapted for a television series in 2015. New York: G.P. Putnam’s Sons, 1962. First edition shows “D36” on page 239 as called for, and comes complete in original dust jacket with $3.95 price. Bound in publisher’s black cloth boards with top edge yellow. Some toning to jacket, in very good condition. Private library stamp to front free endpaper, and a few spots of toning to front pastedown, otherwise book is near fine. Sold for $1,500.
First edition, first printing of ”Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep” by Philip K. Dick, Doubleday & Co.: Garden City: 1968. In its original dustjacket bearing the $3.95 price, this volume bears the definitive first printing point of ”J5” to the bottom of page 210. The heavy existential themes that define Dick’s works are central in this novel, which he sets in a post-apocalyptic future society. This story has been adapted to stage, comic books, radio, and most successfully, to the screen in 1982’s ”Blade Runner,” starring Harrison Ford. Dick later said of director Ridley Scott’s picture: ”…my life and creative work are justified and completed by Blade Runner…” The book was nominated for a Nebula Award and is ranked #6 on AFI’s list of the best sci-fi movies of all time. Other films adapted from Dick’s novels include Total Recall, A Scanner Darkly, Minority Report, Paycheck, Next, Screamers, and The Adjustment Bureau. 210pp. book is bound in grey cloth boards with gilt lettering to spine. Slightly cocked, with wear to board edges and a 0.75” tear to the cloth running up from the bottom of the front joint. Cracking to interior hinge at front pastedown. Missing front free endpaper, and toning to leaves and endpapers. In very good condition. Light toning to dustjacket and minor wear to spine edges, else near fine. Sold for $1,250.

First Edition, First Printing Hardback of “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” by J.K. Rowling — One of Only 500 Copies, the Book That Started It All
The most coveted book in the Harry Potter canon, the first edition, first printing hardback of J.K. Rowling’s first novel, “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone”. This book is one of only 500 hardback copies published in the first printing, more scarce and collectible than the softcover published at the same time.
With all first printing points present, including “First published in Great Britain in 1997” on the copyright page, along with “Joanne Rowling” credited rather than J.K., and no space between Thomas Taylor and the copyright date (“Taylor1997”). Full number line “10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1” is present, as is the 10.99 pound price on rear board, Wendy Cooling quote to front board, and the spelling error of “Philospher’s” on rear board. Other early printing points are also present, including the repeat of “1 wand” on page 53, and “highchair” on page 8.
Since most of the 500 copies of the hardcover book were intended for library use, the number of extant copies is unknown, though estimated to be significantly fewer than the 500 published. All 500 were issued without a dust jacket, which wasn’t introduced until the third printing. This copy has part of the library laminate peeled off, corners of board professionally retouched, and previous owner’s inscription to front free endpaper. Some sunning to spine and minute cocking. A wonderful first printing, still in very good condition. A hallmark of children’s literature, one of the few hardback copies still available. Sold for $53,550.
Rare first edition, first printing of one of the most desired books in the history of literature, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s ”The Great Gatsby,” published by Charles Scribner’s Sons: New York: 1925, with the nearly impossible to find first printing dustjacket. Every point is present: 1925 is printed on title page; Charles Scribner’s Sons logo appears on the copyright page with no subsequent printing statements; ”chatter” appears on page 60; ”northern” appears on page 119; ”it’s” is printed on line 16 of page 165; ”sick in tired” is found on page 205; ”Union Street station” is mistyped on line 7-8 of page 211. Bound in dark green cloth boards with title and author’s name blind-stamped to front board and gilt lettering to spine. Francis Cugat’s scarce original unrestored first printing dustjacket has the lowercase ”j” in ”jay Gatsby” on the back panel hand-corrected in ink. Sold for $50,000.

Bill Wilson signed first edition, first printing of “Alcoholics Anonymous: The Story of How More Than One Hundred Men Have Recovered From Alcoholism”. New York: Works Publishing Company, 1939. First printings are rare in their own right, with only about 1,900 extant copies, and ones signed by the founder of Alcoholics Anonymous are extraordinary scarce. Wilson signs this copy on the front pastedown to his friends Dr. and Mrs. Forrist V. Haley, in full: “My Dear Friends / Dr & Myrle Haley / Whose devotion has meant so much to so many – / As Ever / Bill Wilson / 11/21/43″. All first printing points are present: Half-title page is followed by the title page and pages v-viii, with another half-title page before the text begins; complete text is followed by three blank leaves. 400pp. tome measures 6″ x 9.25”. Bound in deep red cloth boards with gilt lettering, housed in a matching slipcase and reproduction dust jacket. Ink notation by Haley appears on front free endpaper, requesting that the book be returned to him. A slip typed with the Serenity Prayer is affixed to the front pastedown above Wilson’s autograph. Another slip with typed Biblical verse is affixed to the top margin of p.71. Surface abrasion to “& Myrle” of inscription. Professional strengthening to boards, overall in very good condition. One of the most important books of the 20th century signed by its founder. Sold for $31,500.

Hardcover with dustjacket. Caldwell, Idaho: The Caxton Printers, LTD.: 1953. Copy given to Nathaniel Branden, her purported protege and lover. Signed and inscribed by Rand in blue ink, “To Barbara and Nathan – – who are now fully my children – to mark your first six-months wedding anniversary – Ayn / July 14, 1953.” Book, which measures 6″x 8.5″, runs 105pp. Thinly-veiled sci-fi-ish allegory supports Rand’s classic Objectivist thesis regarding the subjugation of the ego for the greater whole of society. Dust jacket in near fine condition with minor chips at top. Slight cloth board spotting and very mild toning to interior. A near-perfect signed Ayn Rand first edition copy. Our most expensive Ayn Rand first edition that we have handled. Sold for $22,500.

From its indelible first line, “Call me Ishmael,” to its last, Melville’s singular novel establishes his authority as one of the literary masters of the nineteenth or any century. One of only 2,800 first edition copies published, this volume remains extremely rare as many were destroyed in an 1851 Harper’s warehouse fire. Complete with all leaves for first edition, first state; two flyleaves in the front, 3 at rear along with 6pp. of book ads; title page, dedication page, 2pp. contents, 1p. fore title, 2pp. etymology, 14pp. extracts. Volume measures approximately 5.75″ x 7.75″. Previous owner’s ink inscription to front free endpaper. Overall toning and foxing to interior. Very good, professionally restored condition. Ernest Hemingway Signed First Limited Edition of ”A Farewell to Arms” — Scarce in Original Slipcase
Ernest Hemingway signed limited first edition of his post-WWI classic, ”A Farewell to Arms”, housed in its original limited edition slipcase, with numbers matching. New York: Charles Scribner’s Sons, 1929. Published on 27 September 1929 in a limited edition of 510 numbered copies, this being #214, signed boldly ”Ernest Hemingway” in black fountain pen. In matching slipcase with Charles Scribner’s Sons plate, again listing the limited edition as #214. Measures 6.5” x 9.5”. Some chipping to seams of slipcase, overall in very good condition. Chipping to spine label, otherwise book is near fine. Sold for $10,313.
Louisa May Alcott signed ”Little Women,” published by Roberts Brothers: Boston 1880. Impossible to find, the author’s signature within her masterpiece reads: ”L.M. Alcott” upon the fly-leaf. An Alcott signed instance of ”Little Women” has not been sold at auction in over 4 decades. First published in 1869, Alcott’s spellbinding novel about four sisters coming of age in the Civil War era has since become a classic. This edition is bound in hunter green cloth boards with gilt and black lettering and design. All edges gilt. Measures 7” x 8.5”. Surface loss to exterior corners and edges. Cracking to interior front hinge, with detached front free endpaper. A bookplate affixed to the front pastedown indicates this volume was gifted to the Brookline Public Library in 1917. In addition, the library’s perforated label appears at the bottom of the title page. A news clipping of Alcott’s obituary has been affixed to integral blanks. A label affixed to the rear pastedown reads: ”This book is for use in the library building only” and a barcode label has been partially removed from the rear free endpaper, else very good. With PSA/DNA COA. Sold for $8,908.

Bobbs-Merrill Company: New York: 1943. Ayn Rand first edition, later printing. Signed in ink to front free endpaper, “To David Weisbart / Thank you for your brilliant job of film editing – and for your philosophical interest – Ayn Rand.” First edition points present as follows: page 9: the “9” looks like an “o” at the bottom; page 321, line 5: “refrred”; page 381, line 4: “G.W. the ‘G’ is shorter; page 480 line 2: Dominique misspelled “Domininque.” Along with “Anthem” and “Atlas Shrugged,” “The Fountainhead” placed Rand in rarified company among the great authors of her generation. Volume shows only minor wear to edges and ends, else excellent condition. An exceptional copy of this literary masterwork by one of the twentieth century’s greatest intellectuals.
