John F. Kennedy’s Rocking Chair, Used by JFK as President
One of the few rocking chairs owned and used by John F. Kennedy as President, who famously relied on his rocking chairs to relieve back pain resulting from his WWII injuries. Kennedy’s personal physician, Dr. Janet Travell, first treated JFK as a Senator in the 1950s, where she prescribed the use of rocking chairs custom-made to his specifications.
This stylish mid-century rocking chair is upholstered in orange-brown leather against a rattan backing and wood frame, with a leather cushion that snaps into place. Attached with upholstery nails to the underside of one arm is the business card of Larry Arata, who Jackie Kennedy recruited from Hyannis, Massachusetts to work as the White House upholsterer. Arata’s business card shows a McLean, Virginia address and “White House Upholsterer – 1961 to Present” at bottom, though with some paper loss to the card. Also present on the arm of the chair is John F. Kennedy’s Senate business card, signed “Jack Kennedy”, indicating this chair was likely taken from Kennedy’s Senate office and reupholstered for Kennedy to use as President. According to what Jackie Kennedy has said about the chair, it was used by JFK at the Hyannis Port compound.
Rocking chair originates from Jackie Kennedy, who gifted it to New York City Mayor Ed Koch in December 1984 on the occasion of Koch’s 60th birthday. The Mayor, in turn, gifted it to his executive assistant Rose Mintzer, who passed it down to her son, whose notarized LOA accompanies the chair. Chair measures 44″ tall, 28″ wide and 33″ deep. Chair displays beautifully, with light wear from use. One of the more personal belongings of John F. Kennedy. Sold for $90,000.

Richard III signet-sealed document signed ”R. Gloucestre” as Duke of Gloucester, one of less than a dozen such documents signed with the others residing in public institutions. Richard’s brother, Edward IV, appointed Richard as Lord President of the Council of the North, which sought to exert greater governmental control over Northern England. Document is dated by title donned on Richard as ”Constable and Admyral of England” instead of ”Great Chamberlain,” which dates the document circa 1473-77. As Duke of Gloucester in his early 20’s, Richard III was given many responsibilities by his brother, becoming a powerful landowner and political force to be reckoned with in the north, further establishing his future reign as King of England. Document illuminates his growing power as he hereby intervenes in a land dispute between Ralph Neville, 2nd Earl of Westmorland and some of his tenants. Countersigned by the Duke’s secretary, John Kendal. Document is addressed to Sir Robert Claxton, William Claxton, Richard Bainbridge, ”and other of the ‘Counsell of our right entierly beloved Cousyn Therl of Wesm[or]land’, Pontefract, 22 April n.y. [1473 or 1476-77]”. Reads in part: ”c[er]ten cont[ro]v[er]sie’ between William Trotter, ‘ferrour’ [‘smith’?], Hugh Ile and others on the one hand and William Hunter and Robert Comyn on the other, concerning leaseholds belonging to the Earl of Westmorland. He writes now to a larger group of Westmorland councillors, asking that they examine the petitioners and settle the dispute according to their own discretion, so th[a]t neyther p[ar]tie have cause to sue unto us for remedy in that behalve heraft[er].” Measures 11.75” x 7” on one page. Framed to an overall size of 18.5″ x 14.25″; frame has a drawer that pulls up from the top edge holding a transcript of the document and a biography of Richard III. Document has been archivally restored, though still has paper loss to right side and various holes and chips throughout. Overall very good condition for such a preserved document. Document is exceedingly rare, one of only three documents signed by Richard III to come up for auction in the last 30 years. Sold for $52,417.

Very scarce receipt signed by Paul Revere regarding one of his famous horseback rides, dated 15 February 1775 just two months before his Midnight Ride warning colonists that ”The British Are Coming” before the Battle of Lexington & Concord. As official courier for the Boston Committee of Public Safety, Revere was tasked with riding from Boston to Philadelphia and New York, with historians documenting 18 such rides from December 1773 to November 1775. This was likely the last of the rides before the Revolutionary War began, and is only one of two receipts for the rides ever to appear at auction, with the other selling at Christie’s for $140,000 in 2002. Composed entirely in the hand of Revere, receipt documents expenses ”from Boston to N. York” in the amount of 4 pounds, 3 shillings, and additional expenses for his Horse, and his time, all totaling 13 pounds, 19 shillings. Dated 15 February 1775 by Revere. Document measures 7.5” x 2.25”, framed with an engraving of Revere on horseback to a size of 15.75” x 18”. Uneven edges, clean vertical separation and light chipping at lower left edge. Overall very good plus condition with legible and strong handwriting. With Profiles in History COA. Sold for $36,603.
