The world lost a great man and true revolutionary yesterday and the kind words of countless dignitaries and world leaders have begun to pour in. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh of India so profoundly said of Nelson Mandela,
“A giant among men has passed away.”
Indeed. Mandela himself knew the power of words to convey emotion and strike political change. In 2000, he said,
“It is never my custom to use words lightly. If twenty-seven years in prison have done anything to us, it was to use the silence of solitude to make us understand how precious words are and how real speech is in its impact on the way people live and die.”

His incredible autobiography, “Long Walk to Freedom” expands on Mandela’s personal philosophies and unwavering desire to help his country. This quote from the book powerfully sums up his internal strength,
“I can rest only for a moment, for with freedom come responsibilities, and I dare not linger, for my long walk is not yet ended…For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.”
When Mandela became the first black South African President, he made a point to incorporate the very politicians who once imprisoned him. “If you want to make peace with your enemy, you have to work with your enemy. Then he becomes your partner,” he said of this notion in his book.
Published in 1994, the autobiography details his life, growing up in apartheid South Africa and subsequently, his 27 years in prison and triumphant return to the political spotlight as President.
The cruelty and difficulty he endured as a Robben Island prisoner is unfathomable, and yet he never let it define him on his continuing Long Walk to Freedom even after he was released.
