Here at NateDSanders.com auction house, we recently sold a key piece of movie title art for $15,313. It was for the famed MGM lion. Also, last year, we had a wonderful piece of John Wayne movie title art. Here are the descriptions, pictures and prices of the movie title art items:
MGM glass title plate depicting the profile of its iconic lion. During the 1930s and 1940s, MGM used a unique process to create ”glass transparencies” which are photographs on glass that measure 11.5” x 14”. An image was created and the technical and artistic credits were superimposed over these images, creating ”title plates”. The images on these title plates would inform the audience of the film’s theme and its stars. This particular plate was used at the end of a film, beneath the words ”THE END”, and can be seen in such classics as ”A Christmas Carol”, ”Babes in Arms”, ”The Shop Around the Corner” and ”The Philadelphia Story”. Comes in framed presentation including 12 volt power supply which lights up the plate, making the piece an impressive display. Plate measures 11” x 8” with matte, frame measures 16” x 13”. Near fine. With an LOA from original owner who was an MGM lighting technician. A superb piece of vintage movie title art. Sold for $15,313.
Large, Original Hand-Painted 33″ x 23″ Glass Movie Title Art Crediting John Wayne for “How the West Was Won”
Original movie title art crediting John Wayne for “How the West Was Won”. Large pane of glass is hand-painted “John Wayne” in western-style lettering in yellow, black and orange. Pane is framed handsomely between a reproduction of the background illustrated with a western scene, set back for depth and an additional sheet of glass on the outside. Measures 33″ x 23″. Some of the black paint for shadow effect has flaked off, else fine. Original movie title art has sold for as much as $200,000 each at Profiles in History although this is a lesser example.
