George Washington Military Document Signed as Commander of the Continental Army
George Washington document signed, “G Washington” as Commander of the Continental Army. Document discharges the soldier John Martindale, datelined Headquarters (Newburgh, NY), 8 June 1783. Countersigned by Jonathan Trumbull Jr. and H. Savage. Signed by Martindale on verso. Two-page document on a single sheet measures 8″ x 10.75″. Fantastic George Washington document signed as ”late Commander in Chief of the American Army” regarding his disgraced mentor, Jacob Vanbraham, a mercenary soldier who instructed Washington in the use of military weapons and then served under Washington in the French and Indian War before fighting against Washington and for the British during the Revolutionary War. In this document Washington acknowledges a payment he received from James Mercer to offset costs that Washington incurred lending money to Vanbraham; this money was used by Vanbraham to secure his claim to back pay and land due to him for fighting in the French and Indian War. The land was previously denied because Vanbraham notoriously mis-translated the word ”assassination” in describing the death of French officer Joseph Coulon de Villiers de Jumonville by Washington’s men at the Battle of Fort Necessity, which ignited the French and Indian War. Document is datelined Mount Vernon, 10 January 1786 and boldly signed Go. Washington, acknowledging the payment from Mercer to Washington of ”currency for the use of Jacob Vanbraham Esq late of Virginia formerly a Capt in the Virginia Regiment…for securing the said Vanbraham’s quota of lands…under the proclamation of the Honble. Robert Dinwiddie…” Verso of document contains letter by James Mercer to Vanbraham, dated 21 May 1786 requesting that Vanbraham repay him the amount owed plus interest. Document measures 7.25” x 8.75”, framed in dark green suede with a descriptive plaque and engraving of Washington to a total size of 42” x 24”. Light spotting and folds, with some tissue repair to verso over Mercer’s signature; though Washington’s signature is bold, it’s written over a fold which has an unrepaired split bisecting the signature and a small hole at fold. Overall very good condition. Previously sold at California Book Auctions on 18 November 1998, lot 5747, and referenced in the ”Writings of George Washington”, Volume 28. Sold for $12,500.

Handsome vellum document signed by Abraham Lincoln as President, with Lincoln appointing Speed S. Fry Brigadier General of Volunteers. Overall very good condition with fully intact blue paper seal. Sold for $10,588.

Document signed by Abraham Lincoln on 23 February 1863, appointing Silas A. Miller as 2nd Lieutenant of the 12th U.S. Infantry. Miller would be KIA on the 2nd of July of that year at Gettysburg. Document features a blue stamped seal of the United States War department, and contains Lincoln’s signature to lower right. Countersigned by Secretary of War Edwin Stanton. Large vellum document measures 15” x 19”, in a 24” x 29” frame bearing a small plaque reading ”Abraham Lincoln / February 23, 1863”. Folds to document and light discoloration along bottom. Very good to near fine. Sold for $10,068.

Abraham Lincoln military commission signed as President during the Civil War, appointing a Second Lieutenant on 1 August 1864. Lincoln elegantly signs with his full signature ”Abraham Lincoln” at lower right, countersigned by Secretary of War Edwin Stanton. Vellum document measures 15.75” x 19”, with intact green paper seal and military vignettes. Framed to 23.75” x 28.25”. Some shadowing of seal from folding and light discoloration, overall in very good plus condition with an unusually bold signature by Lincoln. Sold for $9,375.

John Hancock military document signed from 1776, as President of the Continental Congress, appointing an Ensign to the 1st New Hampshire Regiment, headed by Colonel John Stark. At the Revolutionary War Battle of Bennington, Stark rallied over 1,400 untrained militiamen, without uniforms and using their personal firearms, to thwart a British raid on Bennington, Vermont, famously telling his troops, “We’ll beat them before night or Molly Stark’s a widow!” Dubbed “The Hero of Bennington” and promoted to General, Stark also proved himself at Bunker Hill, Trenton, Princeton and the Siege of Boston.
John Hancock’s large, eloquent signature is on full display here, with his characteristic paraph below. Dated 8 November 1776, document is countersigned by Charles Thomson as Secretary of the Continental Congress. Measures 12″ x 8.25″. Reinforced with paper on verso. Some separation along folds, with folds touching the ends of Hancock’s signature. Overall very good condition given age, and with a bold, attractive signature by Hancock. Sold for $9,375.

Benjamin Franklin document signed as President of the Committee of Safety for the American colonies in the Revolutionary War, dated 4 October 1775 (mistakenly written 1755) from Philadelphia; Franklin was appointed President of the Committee earlier in 1775. With large, bold signature ”B. Franklin Presidt”, document is headed ”In Committee of Safety”, and appoints the Gentleman John Hennessy to Lieutenant of the armed boat Effingham, reading in part, ”…We reposing especial trust and confidence in your Patriotism, Valour, Conduct and Fidelity, Do by these Presents constitute and appoint you to be Lieutenant of the Provincial Armed boat, called the Effingham fitted out for the protection of the Province of Pennsylvania, and the Commerce of the River Delaware, against all hostile Enterprizes and for the defence of American Liberty…” Document measures 13” x 8.25”. Some uneven toning, and professionally laid to paper for infill. Very good condition with bold signature. With PSA/DNA COA. Sold for $8,750.
