Where Did Mickey Mouse Originate From?
Mickey Mouse was created by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks in 1928 after losing the rights to the character Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. Mickey first publicly debuted in the animated short Steamboat Willie and other early appearances include The Karnival Kid and Mickey’s Pal Pluto. His birthday was later designated as November 18, the release date of Steamboat Willie. As the face of Disney and one of the most recognizable characters across the globe, he’s had television shows including The Mickey Mouse Club, a newspaper comic strip, and numerous movies.

Signed Mickey Mouse Print — Sold for $7,753
We realized $7,753 for a Walt Disney signed dye transfer print of Mickey Mouse from his 25th anniversary. Framed and matted print measures 14.5 x 15.75 inches. Disney’s signature is done in red crayon on lower right of mat and measures about 5.5 x 2.5 inches.

Mickey Mouse Cel From Society Dog Show — Sold for $7,422
In Disney’s early years, short films featuring Mickey Mouse and other favorites were released on a monthly or twice-monthly schedule. Society Dog Show is a short from 1939 that features Mickey Mouse taking Pluto to a fancy dog show. Pluto’s excitable personality causes him to struggle and fit in with the other dogs. Despite this, he saves the day when a fire erupts which leads him to win over the audience and take home the top prize. We sold a cel from Society Dog Show for $7,422.

Premiere Issue of the Mickey Mouse Book — Sold for $2,000
The Mickey Mouse Book premiered in 1930 and was one avenue Disney used to promote the lovable anthropomorphic mouse. This sixteen page book measures 9 x 12 inches and contains sheet music, stories and games. We sold a first printing copy of the Mickey Mouse Book premiere issue for $2,000.

Mickey Mouse Artwork, Circa Mid 1930s — Sold for $1,417
Rare, 1930’s original drawing of Mickey Mouse, likely rendered by Disney artist Tom Wood, who came to Disney Studios in 1932. Ink and watercolor artwork was drawn for Helen Hayes’ daughter Mary MacArthur, and features Mickey Mouse energetically conducting the Three Little Pigs in symphony. Lively piece is inscribed in black ink, “Best Wishes to Mary MacArthur / Mary MacArthur Mary MacArthur / Best Wishes to Mary MacArthur / Tra-La-La-La-La!” Walt Disney’s name is written at bottom right beneath Mickey’s crate, likely by Wood. Mary MacArthur sadly died from polio at the young age of 19. Undated drawing measures 8″ x 7″ with minor toning and wear to bottom edge, else near fine. From the estate of Helen Hayes.
