Mercury-Redstone 3, or Freedom 7, was the first United States human spaceflight, on May 5, 1961, piloted by astronaut Alan Shepard. It was the first crewed flight of Project Mercury. Shepard’s mission was a 15-minute suborbital flight with the primary objective of demonstrating his ability to withstand the high g-forces of launch and atmospheric re-entry.

John Glenn Signed Mercury 6 Mission Space Flown Dollar
John Glenn signed dollar bill flown in space on the Mercury 6 mission with signed mat. The single dollar bill is signed “J H Glenn, Jr.” in ink. Launched 20 February 1962, Mercury 6 was the first mission to put an American (Glenn) in orbit. Flown bill is mounted to a COA also signed “J H Glenn, Jr.” and “M. Scott Carpenter”. The text of the COA reads: “This CERTIFIES / the following U.S. currency / Serial No. A31941854B / accompanied Lt. Col. John H. Glenn / on the first manned orbital flight aboard Friendship 7 Feb. 20, 1962″. Bill measures 6.25″ x 2.5″. Stapled to COA with two staples near the bottom edge to an overall size of 11.25″ x 8.5”. An additional signature on the bill reads: “Terry Thompson”. Some abrasions to upper right of bill and creasing, else near fine. toning to the mat, else near fine. With JSA LOA and PSA/DNA COA. Sold for $17,600.
Gemini 3 space-flown two-dollar bill signed by Gus Grissom and John Young. The first pair of Americans ever in space sign the currency: ”Gus Grissom / GT-3” and ”John Young / 3-23-65” in red felt tip. Signed bill comes mounted to a certificate that reads in full: ”This is to certify that the currency with serial number A76270198A did as a matter of fact accompany ‘Gus’ Grissom & John Young on their three orbit flight, March 23, 1965, in the Gemini Space Craft ‘Molly Brown.’ Accomplishing the ‘Free World’s’ first two-manned space venture / [signed] Gus Grissom / John Young”. The signed bills were at the center of a prank, told in full in Russell Still’s book, ”Relics of the Space Race”; Grissom reportedly moved the bills from their hiding place behind the instrument panel and substituted play money so that when the launch supervisor in charge of the flown souvenirs went to retrieve them, he found the play money instead. The truth came out after a few weeks and the bills were given out to Cape Canaveral personnel. Series 1953C $2 bill is near fine and comes mounted to a 10” x 7.5” COA, also near fine, framed to an overall size of 11” x 8.5”. Sold for $3,750.
Exceptionally Scarce Apollo 11 Flag Flown to the Moon — Signed by Armstrong, Aldrin & Collins
United States flag flown to the moon on Apollo 11 during the historic 1969 mission. Flag is mounted to an official NASA certificate reading: ”This flag traveled to the Moon with Apollo 11, the first manned lunar landing, July 20, 1969.” Certificate is signed ”Neil Armstrong”, ”Michael Collins” and ”Buzz Aldrin” in felt tip and has the Apollo 11 crew emblem near the center. Printed along the bottom edge are the first words by Neil Armstrong after stepping upon the moon: ”One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind”. The silk United States flag measures 6” x 4”, mounted to the NASA certificate, which measures 10” x 12”. Some show through of adhesive to flag corners and light toning to certificate, else near fine. Sold for $63,195.
Jack Swigert’s Own Apollo 17 Flown Robbins Medal, Serial Number 41
Apollo 17 Robbins medal, serial number 41. Sterling silver medal commemorates Apollo 17 as the most recent lunar landing conducted by NASA to date. The mission launched 7 December 1972 and returned safely twelve days later. Pictorial obverse is cast with mission insignia, featuring stylized design elements of the U.S. flag and an eagle, alongside a bust in profile of Greek god Apollo. Figures are set against a detailed space ground featuring the moon and ringed planets. Scene is circumscribed by title, ”Apollo XVII / Cernan-Evans-Schmitt”. Reverse reads, ”Launch / Dec. 6, 1972 / Taurus-Littrow / Dec. 11, 1972 / Entry / Dec. 19, 1972”, circumscribed, ”America – Challenger / Apollo XVII The Beginning”. Coin measures 1.25” and is made of sterling silver, housed in its original ”Robbins Company” plastic box with an ”41” sticker on the bottom. Fine. With an LOA from Apollo 13 astronaut Jack Swigert’s sister. Sold for $56,250.
Exceptionally Rare Neil Armstrong Signed Poster, Measuring 20.25” x 27.75” — With Steve Zarelli COA
Scarce Neil Armstrong signed poster entitled ”Man on the Moon”, the famous photograph taken by Armstrong showing Buzz Aldrin on the moon with Armstrong reflected in Aldrin’s visor. Armstrong boldly signs the poster in black marker, providing a stunning presentation measuring 20.25” x 27.75”. Poster is archivally paper backed, with creasing smoothed and indiscernible closed tear repaired at top. Very good plus condition. With a COA from Steve Zarelli Space Authentication. Sold for $18,750.

American flag flown aboard the historic Apollo 11 mission to the moon, from the collection of Buzz Aldrin. Flag is affixed to certificate reading: “This flag traveled to the Moon with Apollo 11, the first manned lunar landing, July 20, 1969” along with the Apollo 11 mission insignia and the words “One small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind”. Flag measures 5.5″ x 4″ and certificate measures 9.75″ x 11.75″. Handsomely framed in navy blue mat and black wood frame, measuring 16.25″ x 18.5″. In stunning, near fine condition. Accompanied by an LOA from David Van Zile, Buzz Aldrin’s stepson. Sold for $14,641.
Apollo 15 Robbins Medal Flown
Apollo 15 (July 26, 1971 – August 7, 1971) was the ninth crewed mission in the United States’ Apollo program and the fourth to land on the Moon. It was the first J mission, with a longer stay on the Moon and a greater focus on science than earlier landings. Apollo 15 saw the first use of the Lunar Roving Vehicle.
Apollo 15 Robbins Medal, serial number 118. Extraordinarily rare medal is one of just 127 flown from a batch of 304 minted. Due to a misprint of the word “apennines” on reverse side, most (177) of the medals were sent back to the manufacturer and could not be redone before the spacecraft’s launch, leaving only the 127 with the correctly printed word to make the flight. Medal features mission insignia of a trio of left-facing flight symbols upon a stylized lunar surface ground. The astronauts’ surnames are inscribed to the border underneath and “Apollo 15” is inscribed at top center. Reverse features a motto, “‘Man’s Flight Through Life Is Sustained By The Power Of Knowledge’”, surrounding “Apollo 15 / Falcon / Endeavor” with dates engraved to fields under each. The name of the mission’s landing site on the moon “Hadley / Appennines” appears beside the middle item. At upper left is a winged propellor symbol. The rim is engraved “Sterling” and with the serial number. Measures nearly 1.5″ in diameter and weighs 20 grams or 0.75 ounces. Scratching to center symbol, else fine. With an LOA from the Swigert estate. Sold for $12,600.
Neil Armstong Handwritten Autograph Letter Signed
Neil Armstrong autograph letter signed. Just months after Apollo 11, the first man to walk on the moon’s surface writes on NASA stationery, in full: “Dear Friends, Finally received your kind note & the clippings from my parents when I saw them in Indiana last week. Appreciated all the prayers & good wishes, they must have helped. All the best in 1970. Sincerely, Neil Armstrong”. 1pp. measures 5.25″ x 9.5″. Letter has been taped to another sheet of paper that has been folded card-style, though can be expertly removed. Some toning and tape residue along margins; very good condition. Sold for $5,838.
Lot of 6 Space Flown Patches From Apollo 13 With a Letter of Provenance in the Hand of Jack Swigert
Lot of 6 official patches flown in space on the near-disastrous Apollo 13 mission in 1970. Round patches are embroidered with mission slogan ”Ex Luna, Scienta”, meaning ”from the moon, knowledge” surrounding dynamic mission insignia: a trio of horses galloping over the moon. Five are identical, with embroidery in orange, yellow, brown, black, white and blue with sparkly silver border. The remaining patch is the same design but crafted in muted earth tones. Accompanied by a handwritten authenticity note in Swigert’s hand on U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Science and Technology letterhead. Each patch measures just over 4” in diameter. Fine. With an LOA from Jack Swigert’s estate. Sold for $8,438.
Space flown dime from the Mercury-Redstone 4 mission. Dime was flown with Gus Grissom aboard the Liberty Bell 7, which launched from Cape Canaveral on 21 July of 1961. Flown dime, minted in 1961, comes with a sterling silver medallion engraved with the launch date and mission title. Both are affixed to a metal loop for hanging on a necklace chain. Paper tape affixed to the medallion reads, ”66-90-31”. Some tarnishing, else near fine. From the personal estate of Gus Grissom and with an LOA from his son. Sold for $3,049.
