Beautiful Papal copy of ”Lumen Fidei”, signed by its author, Pope Francis. Published by the Vatican Press in 2013, it is the first encyclical of Pope Francis’ papacy. In ”Lumen Fidei”, Pope Francis finishes the encyclical started by his predecessor Pope Benedict, who began writing on the history and nature of faith, including the mutually inclusive notions of faith and reason, and the importance of faith in building a moral society. Pope Francis writes in the encyclical, ”…A light this powerful cannot come from ourselves but from a more primordial source: in a word, it must come from God. Faith is born of an encounter with the living God who calls us and reveals his love, a love which precedes us and upon which we can lean for security and for building our lives. Transformed by this love, we gain fresh vision, new eyes to see; we realize that it contains a great promise of fulfillment, and that a vision of the future opens up before us…” Pope Francis signs the title page, ”Francisco” above the embossed stamp of the Pope’s personal secretary. Stunning garnet-colored hardcover book measures 5.25” x 9.25” and runs 84 pages, with a garnet ribboned bookmark. Pope writes to Samuel Buckley, publisher of the Daily Courant, the first daily newspaper in England, Scotland, and Ireland from Southampton, England on 26 August [1735], in part, “…This is partly to tell you I received the last marks of yr. kind Readiness to oblige me, in yr. notes & yr. Books ye send me: but it was just as I was taking Coach for Southampton, where to take leave (I fear my last) of my Lord Peterborrow. I write from his Couch-side, where he lies in great pain sometimes, but in spirit still & talks of answering ye misrepresentations of Bish: Burnet’s History before he dies. Tis hard, yt when a great Man has labored thro a life of public service or cares, the first scenes of it are liable to ye Envy of Contemporaries, & ye last to ye Caprice of Historians. I really think it worth no man’s while to do any great or good action for any other motive than the inward satisfaction of his own conscience in ye good done. Autograph Letter Signed Regarding the Last Days of Joseph Smith Before His Murder — 1844 — “The Mormon camp is in dire confusion, a party having sprung up in its midst who are preaching a reformation from the abominations of Smith, whom they brand a ‘fallen Prophet'”
Autograph letter signed regarding Joseph Smith by Reverend J.T. Tucker of Hannibal, Missouri. Composed on 20 June 1844, just one week before Smith’s murder, to Reverend M. Badger of the American Home Missionary Society in New York. In part, “…the world, the flesh & the devil are driving on their projects of sin and ruin. One grand device of Satan is just now being exploded in our neighborhood with a terrible noise and stench. The Mormon camp is in dire confusion, a party having sprung up in its midst who are preaching a reformation from the abominations of Smith, whom they brand a ‘fallen Prophet,’ fallen from his high estate, and now, as they say, ‘an incarnate fiend’. They have stripped the prophets cloak off most unceremoniously and the pollutions concealed beneath are too vile for repetition. Mob violence among themselves has followed this Exposure. And the prospect is that the scenes of Missouri will be repeated in the expulsion of this miserable sect from their present location…” Tucker refers to the publication by dissident Mormon elders of the Nauvoo Expositor, revealing Smith’s practice of polygamy, which was still an open secret. It also told of his questionable financial dealings, inquisitorial autocracy, and manipulation of the courts. Letter shows several ink spots, as some of the text (none of it regarding Smith) was used for the Missionary Society’s publications. Minor splits repaired with transparent paper. Overall, very good. Sold for $2,363.

Fawcett sure can’t be pushing or marketing FEAR to have made so little on it. I could sell more than that on a New York street corner. I enjoyed the literature. From your Ackermanews I sent AEV a birthday card to wish him well. Hope he got lots and had a great day. Speaking of birthdays, I should probably check my records and see if I have yours. (I don’t want to miss any memorable occasions!) At a glance, I don’t believe I have a record of your exact birthdate, just that it’s around November, I think. You’ll probably find that I’m sending you a bit of traffic. It seems like all of a sudden a few people are writing to me about my non-Scientology writings which they want to make a TV Series out of or a movie or other exploitation. Knowing how varied your skills and interests are, I’m confident to have you negotiate and handle on my behalf. Do keep me posted on how everything goes. Take care, my friend.
