What is Martha Washington Remembered For?

Martha Washington served as the first First Lady of the United States. She helped set the stage for what the role should encompass while also supporting the President. Martha hosted regular social gatherings for politicians and citizens in New York and Philadelphia. As First Lady she helped establish a sense of national unity created traditions that future administrations would follow.

Some Martha Washington Items We’ve Sold:

Martha Washington Personally Owned Lace — Sold for $3,781

Martha Washington personally owned piece of lace. Intricate lace was part of lot 2134 of the auction of items from the Tobias Lear family, held by James D. Julia on 5 February 2010. Colonel Tobias Lear married into Martha Washington’s family by wedding her niece, and served as Washington’s personal secretary from 1784 until Washington’s death at Mount Vernon, for which he was present in 1799. Washington’s map of Yorktown sold at the same auction for a world-record breaking amount of $1.15 million, the most ever paid for a map. Lace measures approximately 9.5″ x 3.25″. Near fine. Sold for $3,781.

Martha Washington Signature — Sold for $2,400

First Lady Martha Washington’s signature, reading “M Washington” upon a 2.5″ x .25″ slip of paper. Lot includes a letter of provenance from Martha’s great-granddaughter, dated 1852 and reading: “Autographs of Mrs. Martha Washington for G. Washington Lewis his Great Great Grand Mother left by his Grand Mother E.P. Lewis.” A note on the left corner identifies the author as Eleanor Lewis, the mother of George Washington Lewis, and the daughter of Eleanor (Nelly) Parke Custis Lewis, Martha Washington’s granddaughter from her first marriage. Letter of provenance measures 7.25″ x 2.75″ on one page. Signed slip is trimmed irregularly, else near fine. Sold for $2,400.

George and Martha Washington Oleographs — Sold for $1,216

Lovely pair of oleographs by engraver E.C. Middleton of George and Martha Washington. In the mid-19th century, Middleton produced a series of oleographs of notable individuals in a process of chromolithography using oil based ink that closely resembled the actual oil paintings upon which they were based. These portraits of George and Martha Washington, based upon the oil paintings by Gilbert Stuart, were produced in 1863 and 1864 respectively, with the oleograph mounted to canvas. With Middleton’s information to verso of the canvasses. In ornate gilt frames, possibly original, measuring 19″ x 22″ each. Not examined out of frame, each appears near fine. Sold for $1,216.
