Mark Twain’s writings have influenced many prominent writers of the 20th century including Ernest Hemingway and William Faulkner. First edition titles, including The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court and Life on the Mississippi, are very popular with book collectors. Copies with the original cloth bindings are among the most sought after and can fetch top dollar.
Here are some first edition Mark Twain titles we sold:

First Edition, First Printing of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer
While The Adventures of Tom Sawyer wasn’t an instant classic, it enjoyed moderate success in the U.S. upon its release in 1876 and gradually reached the iconic status it now has. The character Tom Sawyer is reportedly based on Mark Twain himself as well as a combination of his childhood friends. We realized $7,875 for a first edition, first printing of the book with “THE” on the half-title page in 10-point font instead of 14-point. Book measures 7 x 8.75 inches and has been professionally recased into original binding.

First Edition, First Printing of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer
Mark Twain has proclaimed that The Adventures of Tom Sawyer was the first manuscript typed on a typewriter. Historians have disputed this and believe it was actually Twain’s Life on the Mississippi (1883). Regardless of the technicalities, Twain was the first notable writer to use a typewriter. We sold a first edition, first printing of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer for $6,655. Unrestored book measures 7 x 8.75 and has previous owner’s name inked to flyleaf.

First Edition, First Printing of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
Mark Twain’s masterpiece, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, is considered by many to be one of the most important pieces in American literature. Some U.S. students are introduced to the book as young as middle school. We sold a first edition, first printing of this classic published by Charles L. Webster and Company for $5,625. Book measures 6.875 x 8.675 inches and has all first issue points. Green cloth boards show light shelf wear but overall in very good condition.
